330e catches fire in the Czech Republic, reportedly while charging

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Wednesday evening 330e caught fire in dealership near Prague, Czech Republic. Firefighters put it in water tank just to be sure. It will stay there for a few days. Not much info what really happened, but it looks like it started burning while on charging. More info in Czech https://www.hzscr.cz/clanek/pri-poza...ova-skoda.aspx

Let's just hope BMW investigates and finds the cause. If it was a one of malfunctioning or a general flaw that needs some kind of action

Petrol-engined cars catch fire sometimes (it's happened to me whilst driving). Unless there's clear statistical data which shows it's happening more to PHEV vehicles, then this wouldn't cause me any concern.

The joys of lithium batteries.

The industry needs to quickly abandon them and move towards far more efficient solid state batteries.

Statistics show plug-in vehicles catch fire much more often when you consider the cases as a percentage of vehicles on the road, and if they're occupied or not. Unlike plug ins; gasoline and diesel personal automobiles rarely spontaneously combust when not being used.

People have to be nuts to charge a vehicle inside an attached garage. It's borderline reckless IMO.

Solid state batteries along the lines of what you need for an automotive application are significantly more expensive than LiIon. People are working on it as it's just a better technology, but right now they're far too expensive to mass produce in a car.

...unless of course you want your EV/PHEV to cost 3-5x what it does now.

Agree it doesn't cause concern with a one-off case, but one could argue they would rather a car catch fire while driving than if it's plugged in and unattended at home (survival rate for a vehicle fire is greater than that of a home fire).
