Clear-coat failure on 2020 M340i

I recently purchased a 2020 M340i. It's still under a CPO warranty which is being transferred to myself from the previous owner.

There are cosmetic imperfections along the edges where the rear bumper piece meets the rear quarter panels on both sides. They appear to be slowly progressing, and the rear left side appears to have clear-coat beginning to peel off on the corner of the rear bumper as seen in the picture.

I know the car was paint-corrected and ceramic coated by the previous owner some time in 2023. I'm not sure if that's really relevant or not.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this from spreading and fix it? Are clear coat issues covered under BMW's warranty?

That does look like it could be clear coat failure at first glance, but I'm hard pressed to imagine that it would happen so soon through normal wear and tear. Paint correction ahead of ceramic coating usually indexes a lot heavier on polishing than cutting, so I am skeptical that any paint correction caused this. Is the car fax clean? It looks like a the rear bumper was replaced and they didn't let the paint settle properly before doing the install, which can most definitely cause this. Also, if they didn't prep the surface of the bumper before replacing it and they just sprayed on more paint or clearcoat, it could cause this as well.

Yes, I would also think that the bumper was re-sprayed.

No matter the cause, it would not be covered by the CPO warranty.

This looks like a subpar bumper paint job, or damage from paint correction, instead of failing clear coat from the factory.

If the damage keeps progressing then the bumper may need to be repainted.

The Carfax was clean. As far as I am aware the car was never in any kind of accident or had parts replaced.

It was leased the by the original owner for 3 years, then sold to the 2nd owner. The 2nd owner said the paint had a lot of swirl marks so he got it corrected and ceramic coated. That's the only body /paint work he told me about.

Is there anything I can do to stop it from progressing or fix the small amount that is there?

That's unfortunate as I was not aware that this ever happened.

Looks like it was repainted without removing bumper from car. Have seen this many times before. All you can do is get it painted by a reputable body shop.

Many moons ago when I use to work at a used Honda dealership department. We had a touch up guy that came in once a week to recondition the used cars that had bumper scratches and hood chips.

He would literally recondition the bumpers and re spray them fully or blended. ( didn’t remove the bumper cover he just taped what he needed to protect. And he did this right out side.

This is probably what happen. Since there is no accident report on file.

I’m sure it wouldn’t cost a lot to have the bumper cover wet sanded, and re-cleared

One option is to seek trusted local body shop to spot fix those edges.
