In sport mode the engine doesn't shut off and hybrid adds a kick in the pants for the second before the turbo boost comes on both off the line and at speed. All in all I was pretty impressed (and ordered one) On the sound topic: I have already shared my POV that the low rpm and low engine load pops and crackles are excessive and happy to see the 2021s improve on that. Not even the worst overcammed big block pops and crackles that much. from my limited research it doesn't look like any part numbers were changed 2020 to 2021 so tone and volume should be the same where not managed by software (cold start, fake overrun) Context for my opinions: I drive an 18 F32 with MPPSK, I keep stop/start off 100% of the time because I find it intrusive |

The exhaust sound was not changed in the M340i '21 MY, it's just now tied to the iDrive 7 (new) engine sound control's menu, independent from the Driver Experience control (Comfort, Sport, etc), as oppose to the prior model year.. I guarantee that the OP has the "Exhaust Sound" in Reduced mode (default setting), hence the reason for the toned down exhaust note.. So relax, you guys with a US spec vehicle still have your precious pops and burbles, to annoy the public with but it was entertaining seeing some lose their collective minds over what equates to nothing more than this classic Spinal Tap "11" video.. |

It's no mystery, this has been discussed and confirmed before on some of the latest X and 5 Series models but I understand your skepticism.. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1685801 |

Actually, to be clear, this setting has only been confirmed for US Spec vehicles only, as certain regions in the world doesn't get the "Sporty" sound option in the iDrive menu i.e. so by the extension, no pops and burbles for those specific vehicles..

The actual sound of the engine is what I'd like to hear and miss from NA engines, especially the V8's (my e92 M3 sounded so good). It feels like synthetic burble sounds appeared to compensate for the loss of NA exhaust note... to make them sound exciting again. Wish we could code in the diverter valve or wastegate « whoosh » sounds my '03 stage 3 Jetta was so cool for that.

From what I understand, the individual sound profile is tied the exhaust and ASD volume and is saved unto individual options, within the iDrive menu, outside of Sport or Sport+, unlike on the older models. I like It, I'm not a prude but just not a fan of boisterous exhaust sound or attracting unnecessary attention to myself but I understand that's going thing now, so no judgment. Personally, I just like the idea of having the option to tone down (or up) the exhaust sound, at will.. However, this is just for the standard models, more that likely, future M cars with have a dedicated exhaust button, to toggle the sound (or burbles) intensity, like on the M5. |

It's not really news but I guess folks wasn't aware that the new menu had a direct effect on the exhaust sound profile. I'm not sure which software update it is tied to but someone here with a '21 can confirm it for you. Now we just need someone to confirm since it does say "engine sound" and not "exhaust sound". Look forward to seeing a comparison. |

That thread seems to waffle between the thought that it's ASD and one guy that thinks it's ES.
I think it needs a test still... Last edited by obscurehero; 11-13-2020 at 05:32 AM.. |

you can check my video below. that's how it works for non EU models in sport mode… i have a german spec m340i and coded the menu few weeks ago with bimmercode. maybe that is new for 21 models.
for EU cars, you need to enable burble mode via bootmod, mhd or by a tuner of your choice before coding this. otherwise it won't Change anything. so... if you have a 21 non EU car, you can try this menu. but i guess it should be activated in sport mode from factory allready! |

OP and/or someone else - we need a test for this. Let's see if indeed there is a setting for exhaust noise within the iDrive menu independent of engine driving mode. Would love to see a video comparison of that.

I have a non-EU (U.S.) 2021 M340i with build date of mid-August 2020. I do not have this option in the iDrive menu.

I also have a US-spec 2021 m340i that's a Sept/Oct build and don't see the engine sounds menu. Currently on software version 07/2020.32 with 07/2020.54 downloading.
