Painted my 330i Exhaust Tips

Had some free time so painted my exhaust tips. There are 2 pins on the top of the top that form a V shape into the part welded onto the exhaust if that makes sense. You push those in and then pull the tip off. I used an engine enamel paint. I'm not sure how long they will last but I figured for $5 I might as well try myself before spending $140. Very happy with the results.

Looks like it's already coming off at the bottom.

Well damn. It’s like zachart read my mind! I was thinking of this and was wondering how to get the tips off. Looks like I don’t have any excuse now.

And it looks good. Though friends who have done it say the paint invariably ends up peeling. But I’m still going to try it out.

Edit - Question on your photo beneath

Yeah I'm expecting it to peel off at some point but I'm bored and figured it's worth a shot.

No, That pin that protrudes out is welded to the exhaust. It's the 2 chrome pieces that form the V that want to push in so the tip can slide off. The first one I took off I was able to pull really hard and this pic is how the pins looked. when i pushed them in it came out much easier.

Ah gotcha. So I use a screw driver or something to push the two pins I assume. I gotta go check it out sometime soon and see how I can remove it

Exactly. I used a flat head screwdriver, the pins are pretty tight.

Yeah I was going to get them powdercoated but all the places around me were $600 so I painted them myself. I spent like $20 on the paint and when they start to chip I will get them powdercoated, just figured I should try myself before I spend the money.

I just tried for like 30s but there wasn’t enough space under the car to move around. And the metal V pins are in there pretty damn tight. Plus claustrophobia doesn’t help at all.

I wonder if there’s a way to leave it there and paint as is without removing the tips. I saw that people have done it on old X5s after masking the entire area and exposing just the tips. I’ll look into that when I can.

Edit - I watched videos of people doing it on M3s that also have that pin protruding from the exhaust holding it in place. But I don’t see the V clamps. They basically used a rubber mallet to whack it out. I wonder if I can do that on the G20 too or if the V pins lock the tip in place.
I hate BMW for making things more difficult than it should be.

I thought about keeping them on too when I couldn't get them off this is the video I was going to follow. I don't recommend it but I was able to get one of them off by just pulling really really hard. Some people use WD40 but I was too scared to use that because its flammable.

If you could get one of it off just by pulling on it really hard, I’m assuming the mallet method should work? I don’t care if there are a few small dents on the back where no one will see it unless the car is on stands

I’ll try that in a few days and post back.

For a diy, I actually think this came out good! Nice job. Definitely looks more aggressive.

I got the tips off. I’m surprised that it wasn’t too difficult. I didn’t use a mallet or any tools. I wore a pair of thick gloves to protect my fingers. Grabbed the tips from behind on both sides. Some hard pulling and wiggling of the tips and they came right off!

I’ve cleaned the tips pretty decently. But it’s too cold outside to spray paint it. I did some reading and everyone mentioned spray painting when the outside temps are 60-70F and it isn’t too humid in order to help the paint bond better. Unfortunately, it’s 35F outside. So yes. Looks like I’ll be running tip-less for a few days/weeks. Car definitely looks weird without the tips. Thank god I don’t see it when I’m driving or when it’s parked in the garage (since I back it up into the garage).

My plan is to spray three coats, bake it (in an old toaster oven that I have and won’t be using again) and repeat it till I have 9 coats of paint. I’m curious to see how that holds up wrt peeling and chipping.

I’ll post the outcome when I’m done with the project. For now, the tips are clean and shiny (I used a Brillo pad to remove soot, tar and dirt from the outside). I have a few cans of Krylon high heat max paint (in gloss black) that can withstand up to 600F continuously and 1200F intermittently. I’m hoping that that should last three years without peeling

Removed mine the other day to clean, came off easier than I imagined to be honest! Already have dark chrome tips on my 330i M Sport Plus.

Cleaned them up and coated with 'Carbon Collective Platinum Wheels' ceramic coating... should keep them looking nice🤞🏼
