Thanks for sharing! Would be nice if BMW can consider using SSD for the Head Unit High 3 entertainment or navigation storage.

I wouldn't trust the illustration (looks like a desktop drive even) but the size of 320 GB indeed indicates that it's a mechanical disk. A bit surprising considering an SSD should be more reliable and negligibly more expensive (if at all).

given the price of these vehicles and navigation (when optional) it is SHOCKING that SSD isn't used by BMW. I think I bought a 2TB SSD for $220 in December.

Thanks...

- no more separate ASD module, ASD integrated into the RAM High module and only available with Top HiFi systems (HK and B&O)
- no more MOST in the HK(688) system, full analog now
- dual amplifier setup for Top HiFi systems (HK and B&O) - RAM + Booster
- BMW Apps gone - no more integrated apps in iDrive. Apple CarPlay now becomes a must have option to listen to native Spotify
- Alexa is in

A 500 GB SSD costs about $70-80, plus it'll be cheaper if they buy in bulk. A SSD would've been a much better move, and they're just as reliable.

Let's just say that if my current work PC was a car, it would have done about 300 000 miles. So enough.

Yeah the writing done by them is so minimal compared to pc or phone use.

What they really need is a 2TB SSD and a built in dash cam (into rear view mirror and rear camera). We can dream...

SSD oddly enough would not be a good choice. The problem with ever smaller cells in today's ssds makes them more likely to "forget" the data written over time. An SSD is most reliable if left on all the time as the controller can periodically refresh the flash memory.
If you think your bimmer already drains batteries too fast when not driven...
Hard drives also will lose information but it happens much slower...

High heat like what's found in a car would accelerate this memory loss. My interior get's up to 140F in the summer easy as I live in a desert.

Now that we've moved to TLC and now even QLC flash memory means the chance of corruption over time is even higher.

A SSD has no moving parts. Can't imagine the life span being any shorter than a hard drive, however the physical environment for any all electronic item is going to be a concern as well when it comes to extreme heat or cold.

The fact that a North American car may be in 110 degree temps in Phoenix or -50 degree temps in Saskatchewan could be a concern.

Regarding bullet 1, I interpreted it to mean the ASD module is still present unless the RAM High module is installed (HK or B&O installed)

On bullet 3, page 21 of the displays and controls document discusses BMW apps.

ASD is integrated into the RAM High -one module, not two as before.

BMW Connected Apps is not the same as BMW Apps - BMW-developed apps native to iDrive vs third-party apps in iDrive thru iPhone.

What do you mean about Siri? If you're using CarPlay, you still have access to Siri EyesFree feature, as before. Unless I'm misunderstanding.

And the long press (3 seconds) of the microphone button activates Siri instead of the BMW voice control system, just as it does in ID6:

"If an Apple iPhone is connected to the head unit via Bluetooth (Apple® CarPlay is not activated),with a long press on the voice input button (3 s) SIRI is activated."

I think built in dashcam is optional with 7 series LCI
