Strut Brace

Ive done quite a bit of mods on the car since i got it 9 months ago
Ive never spent so much time and money on a car, testament to how much i really love it
Ive felt i lacked total confidence in cornering and so ive added a strut brace
Instant cure, so much better positive cornering prowess
I get its not for everyone but may interest some of you guys

I’m amazed that increases torsional rigidity at all.

Me too.
The angles introduced, look like they would flex like a M power badged rubber band.

Yeah, me too! Is there no room for a brace from strut to strut over the engine cover?

But if the OP is happy, all good

Each to there own
It works believe me or not
The mountings are already there so presumably the brace was specifically designed
Physics are not, it works for me and thats all that matters
Just thought id share

And thanks for sharing. Your car looks great and I don’t think anyone was being critical, it just looks like the convoluted angles wouldn’t do much - but if it works, it works.

It must work in a similar way to the the carbon fibre boomerang on the f80 M3.

Not from the way it is assembled, unless we are seeing it wrong. There is only one countersunk screw each end of the middle connector, so adds virtually nothing to the side to side rigidity. Unlike the boomerang brace which does have structural rigidity in the 'U' form.

It's not been installed correctly as there should be a second countersunk bolt on each side. You can see in the 3rd picture it's been installed twisted.

The photo below shows the 2nd bolt. Not my car by the way.

i have the burger strut bars , felt a slight difference but the struts will only do so much. on the fence about ordering the h&r sway bars, which would make a bigger difference imo

I measured the OEM rear sway bar at 18mm and the h&r is 19mm, I understand it's a universal fit for 330/340i so I am waiting for Dinan to release theres to see wich would be the better option.

I installed the OEM M440i strut braces and did feel a difference, it's like the suspension is doing more work than before when a part of the impacts was absorbed by the chassis.

Thanks for posting. Are those OEM parts? If so are you able to share part numbers?

Thought that was the case. The cross bar is still very limited to how it helps, unless welded to the strut parts. It is the two struts that add a bit of rigidity, much like the standard parts fitted to many production models.

I wonder what fitting parts like these does in the event of a crash? The car is specifically engineered to crumple, to protect both the occupants and any person or vehicle that you collide with.

It’d be interesting to know how such struts affect the Euro NCAP rating, or what the insurance hike is for fitting them.

As it is a relatively cheap & easy part to install, why don't BM fit it as standard, at least on the M40s?

I think this a very good point. I am no expert and have very limited experience of vehicle bracing, but ones I have seen on other vehicles, are fitted around the back of the engine which one assumes doesn't affect crumple zones.

Some insurers don't have an issue as long as it's reported, their main issue should be Stirling Moss hooning his big heavy G20 into corners like he's racing at Brands Hatch on the way to do his weekly shop at Tesco...😆

Can you please put in a link or name of the supplier for your strut brace.

Oh and further comment the M440 has strut braces as standard equipment so I don't think a design issue they are just the standard round tube with flattened ends though. I have seen article where standard parts numbers are listed to do a G20 order & fit. On the pre LCI the 440 & 340 have the same dimensions.

https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1810482

I had initially bought the Z4 M40i strut braces with the mind to fix them with nuts and bolts like the BMS/Dinan braces. After seeing that thread I bought 51648491817 "connection upper rear" from the M440i which goes under the slam panel and has nuts welded on so no need to faff around with using/losing a loose nut.
