330e UK supplied charging / granny cable

Hello all. Just joined as recently ordered a 330e.

Just trying to sort out home charging set-up (first dip into EV) and whilst I over-analyse the minefield of thousands of options for dedicated home charging points, I need to prepare for temporarily just using the supplied granny lead.

The car will be kept on driveway not close to the garage so the brick part of the cable will be outside and will therefore somehow need to be protected from the elements a little.

Can I please trouble someone to let me know approx dimensions of the supplied cable? Mainly need the approx dimensions of the brick, length of cable from brick to 3 pin plug, brick to car nozzle etc?

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate
My brick goes outside as bmw said it’s waterproof
Brick is around half a meter from the plug, then another couple of meters to the pump
Usually charges in around 4 hours at 10amp

I tend to tuck the 'brick' under the front of the car so it's not directly in the elements, back in the day when I used to charge the car!!

Thanks for the replies. I heard people tuck their bricks under the car, or on the top of the front tyre, but with only a meter or so of cable from the 3pin plug, how is that done? Thanks again.

I had a similar issue and ended up buying a Rolec 3 pin charger with a 10m cable between the brick and the car plug. It has worked perfectly with no issues.

The brick is IP67 rated so no issues leaving it in the elements. My car took 5 and a bit hours to charge via the 3 pin

Get a charging station installed instead. will speed up the charging to around 3 hours rather than 5-10 hours

I'm thinking of getting one of these until I sort my charging point out.

Am planning to, but from my relatively limited research, there seems to be a massive variation in the quality and/or information about the millions of options out there.

Some get a bad rap for number of faults (Rolec)
Some get a slated for crap app (EO)
Some just up and coming and promising functionality in future releases (SyncEV)
Some have terrible looking charging points (BP)
Some have usage charges after the 3 year warranty, but fail to mention that in any literature (BP)

and almost all have very little information of their product. All very generic. "It charges a car. Buy Now"

...so its a bit of a minefield that I'm still navigating.

I have one of these plugged into an external point on my garden cabin/office with the box secured to a concrete fence post. So far has worked well for me with no problems.

By "box", do you mean the brick part of the charger? Is it under any cover or been ok out in the rain etc?

Seen a couple of posts from people complaining their chargers didnt like getting wet and ended up under buckets or in weatherproof boxes so thought that would be something I should do.

I got one of those. Have never managed to get it to charge any faster than 10 hrs though but think that's my electrics in my garage.

No the BMW brick is not covered as it’s supposed to be water proof, I do have it off the ground to prevent it sitting in a pool of water if we have very heavy rain.

The box I referred to is the weather proof socket that is part of the external lead, I also went for an inline RCD to add a level of safety.

The brick is IP67 rated. So unless your area is prone to flooding you’ll be fine. It means it can sit in a meter of water for 30 mins.

I also thought it best having it off the ground to prevent running it over 😁

I got one of these. Currently have a golf GTE that comes with an extremely long granny charger but was made aware of the shorter BMW cable after I ordered so purchased one in preparation. Excellent sturdy cable

Dont suppose anyone has ever measured the supplied granny cable end-to-end have they and would know the approx length?

Vaguely recall its about 5 metres, but that would make it about 20cm short for me from socket to closest parking space!

Would rather not have to think about buying nn extension cable for either end if I can get away with it.
type-2 extension cable would be best option as could keep granny charger under cover, but are ridiculously priced.

I’m pretty sure it’s 5m mate. Can measure tomorrow for you though if no one else answers in the meantime.

I’m also running a tough leads extension from my cabin through the trellis on top of my fence and attached to a concrete post. All works well. I’ve done 3,260 miles and I’ve filled the fuel tank 3 times with ~ half a tank left. I’m mostly doing local miles due to lockdown and I plug in after every trip. The charge time, on the 3 pin, hasn’t yet been an issue for me.
