As I said previously what they say: The need to distance M cars is very much a global decision. The M customer explains that there is not much variation. The M3/M4 and even M2 are the "wild cards"
They are more volume therefore they can still offer taboo features like a manual transmission. When the competition cannot.

It heralds an all new outlook to BMW M. Engineering,Performance and Design.
Enough with the nonsense about China. Especially when the US remains the largest M market.
I can sympathise in regards to the appearance. But I know that time will be its greatest ally and some of the detractors will come to eventually love it.

I know nothing about this new front end and am very late to the party. I am not going to indicate whether I like or dislike it so I can get an "unbiased" answer to the following question.

If the new kidney grill was designed to allow for increased cooling, what happens to the effectiveness of said cooling when laws require that you install a number plate dead center of the new grill?

Apologize for not following this earlier. But you're saying this new grille is ///M only, not new language that will start being cascaded? Essentially, all the M Sports and ///M performance models don't look different enough, so they're making the actual ///M's more radical looking?

I'm ok with that in theory. But it doesn't need to be busy to be radically different. There are ways this type of grill can look good. Can only hope that's where they'll end up. It can still be evolutionary and radical at the same time.

I actually have a bigger issue with the lines changing like the 2GC than I do the IDEA of a full face grill. But also hate the renders and pictures of those grills so far. Can't just slap it on the existing front end and act like you've changed everything or that it works. Way too busy.

I'd say this would have been taken into consideration given that these cars are designed in Germany, which is a country where front number plates are mandatory.

If you take a look at the spied 4 series front end thread, you can see, similar to Audi, that while the overall grill is huge, the horizontal area in the grill where the license plate mounts is a hard point; a support beam for the front end. So while the overall aesthetic appears as two, giant, conjoined kidney grills, in reality the frontal grill area is still separated into four quadrants, bisected by the number plate support beam.

So while this big grill approach could allow for more airflow and cooling, I personally think it is for aesthetics mainly. Since there is still no airflow going through the grill at the horizontal number plate support beam, BMW could have designed the front end to have two smaller, traditional kidneys and one larger lower front intake a la e9x and f8x M cars.

EDIT: made a quick 'n dirty sketch to show what I'm talking about lol

Scott, this is good news. BUT the easiest way to do this is to STOP putting M badges everywhere on NON-M models. What used to be a regular 335i is nowadays a ///M340i which is IMHO too close to the ///M3. Do you know how many morons are claiming that they are driving a "real M car"?

I still can't get over how ugly the front is. So disappointing the iconic kidney grille design is no longer standard. The rear of the new 3, both in person and in photos seems almost identical to the Lexus IS.

Well, I guess there's no denying it now. The original spy-shot vs. this latest render is almost spot-on. Sadly, the render looks slightly better then the actual spy-shot photo. At least the render has lesser of the dual-coffin grill.

While I agree, i honestly wish it was back to the days where the engine size was reflected in the nomenclature, and if a car shares the same engine with different outputs then use the "is" nomenclature.

For example:
X2 28i = X2 20i
X2 M35i = X2 20is
530i = 520i
540i = 530i
M550i = M544i (or M545i rounded up)

Apparently, this is The Creature from the Black Bavarian Lagoon.

Where/who will BMW pull their design inspiration from next?

SCOTT26 Does this mean there will be major styling differences between the next generation G42 220i/230i/M240i/M245i and the next generation G87 M2?
