Instead of 444hp rwd manual, 475hp awd auto and 510hp awd auto it MIGHT be 475hp rwd manual and 510hp awd auto

We just know one model, not which one.

Ahhhhhh craziness. Just when you think it's all figured out. I just hope it's a lighter, more tossable car than the M5.

M clearly indicated through leaks and through interviews, that The G80 would have a manual transmission. They know it has a special connection to the enthusiast crowd - many who have stuck with the brand buying multiple generations of manual transmission cars.

If they pull the plug on the G80 manual I will never buy another BMW again.
BMW - Your customer base wants and buys manual transmission, please do not screw this up.
When you say “if the M3 doesn’t come with a manual, we’ll buy used or from your competitors”, who exactly are those new car competitors you’ll be buying from? I mean, if you want to get a used car, ok, but I don’t see Benz, Audi, Porsche, Alfa, or anyone else offering any new 500hp sedans with a stick. There was BMW, and... BMW. I hope they continue it, since they’d have the market all to themselves, but if they don’t, what other new sedan could you get?

My wife is mad about this — "what? why? that's terrible" ..... might have to go to an M2 comp afterall .. or maybe a 911 once they start making their manuals ... dang.

Don't jump to conclusions. "No guarantee" is not equal to "guaranteed no". It could go either way. However, I need to maintain certain standards in my reporting, so when I'm no longer certain about something I have to say so.

Or, in other words: a reason to be concerned, no reason to despair.

Did they cancel the torque-converter automatic version?

I swear it seems like there's more fear from the talk of an M3 without a MT, than from all the talk of banning internal combustion engines outright. I wonder if they think they can get a manual transmission in an EV. 🤔

I think it'll be Base (475hp) and Competition (510hp). Base will be RWD with Auto or Manual option and Competition will be M xDrive Auto only like the M5C. Competition needs to offer better lap times than Base so a hp bump, Auto transmission, along with M xDrive will take care of that. Competition could be as quick as an OG F90! This would be a significant difference between OG and Competition, giving each its own identity. It would also force people who want M xDrive to upgrade to Competition which would be very BMW.

If they offer no manual at all for the G80 M3 my head is going to explode!

I was a pretty diehard bmw fan until this current generation where the software updates made a drastic difference between the various civic, comp, cs, GTS models. I was able to get my civic m4 dialed in with a tune and various oem software coding combos, but the fact the car wasn’t out of the box setup to be the best that it could be annoyed me. I understand that incremental improvements are made over time, but now bmw releases multiple setups on top of one another, so you’re not getting incremental improvements, you’re just getting artificially enhanced / downgraded versions to hit target price points. The various downgraded AMG models started this trend and it, in my opinion, really degraded the brand cachet.

Leaving aside brand dilution of the M badge, it used to be you bought an M car and you knew it was setup to be the best it could be at the time - suspension, engine tune, etc. I understand the appeal of 3 settings for everything from steering, dampers, throttle, valves open / shut, brake boost (now a thing apparently!), but to quote Jeremy Clarkson - “I don’t want to set it up, that’s what I paid you for!”. If you’ve got 3 settings for 5 systems and a separate set of software tweaks for 5 versions of the same M car, I struggle to see how you can devote adequate time to making one “the ultimate driving machine”. Oh well, guess I’m getting old...

If this starts production towards the end of 2020, then does this change the end of production for the F82?

We were thinking of doing an ED for one next summer...

That would be an entirely different thread.

It's even referenced in the first post of this thread.

Upcoming BMW model pipeline preview info - from G29 and G06 to F92 and beyond https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686

And no.. M4 EOP hasn't changed.
F82 M4 - 06/20 (M4 CS ends in 02/20)

If you really plan on doing ED on an M4 in the summer ... you better be on top of things with your CA because you will likely need to place your order a minimum of 3 months in advance of your trip.

I would probably buy a Mk8 Golf R, for 4 doors, or the new STI when it comes out. Otherwise a 911 as a compromise for space.

I boycotted Audi after they discontinued the manual, same would apply. Obviously I am extreme, but I am a diehard manual transmission fan, but also a huge “Mguy” - been to the Welt many times, done European delivery several times, Mschool, etc...but the manual is that important. I typically have a car collection that involves at least 2 manual transmission sports cars at a time.

If it has to be a Veloster N, Type R, Miata, GTI, 718, F80, 991, or 992...It just needs to be a manual. Used is obviously another option.
I also have hope that companies will seize upon this void in-the market and gain some market share with the three pedal buyers.

I have seen this move before when Porsche didn’t offer the manual in The GT3, now they have 60% manual take rate on that car, certain products have a customer base that will support a manual...M3 and M2 currently are strong examples that Mcars have that customer base.

I think the point there is that it opens it up. In my mind the 6MT and/or 7DCT is a unique selling feature and you might have some people only considering a BMW because of that. Whereas if everything is 8AT only it is makes everything feel a bit more of the same. Merc have the 9AT now but everything is now an auto.

Similar thing I think with engines, the M5, RS6 and E63 from 2008 were all completely different. But now they are all pretty much the same.
