The boss of BMW M division, Markus Flasch, has confirmed to CAR magazine that the next M3 will be powered by the same twin-turbo six-cylinder engine as the high-performance SUVs, boasting power outputs of 480bhp and 510bhp. It's a move that reflects Mercedes-AMG's two-tier engine strategy.

'The next BMW M3 will have the brand new S58 engine that we're launching in the X3 M and X4 M,' he told us in an interview for the August 2019 issue. 'It will have 480bhp in the standard version and 510bhp in the Competition version.

'Drivetrain-wise, think about the M5's all-wheel drive system - we are able to put it in the M3 as well. It'll be very similar. But we will also do rear-wheel drive cars, purer ones too and a manual stick shift.'

It's confirmation right from the top that CAR's earlier scoop information was bang-on. Don't miss the nine-page interview with Flasch in the August 2019 issue of CAR.

Good recap
I'll be very surprised if the M3 is unveiled in September ? More likely towards end of year?

That date comes from earlier rumor and is not confirmed. Its not clear whether Flasch confirms it in the interview or not. Once the Magazine hits the streets, we can hopefully get the full text.

Considering they still mention water injection for the S58 I would say this article continues to present a lot of rumor as fact... personally I will only take the direct quotes from the M chief as fact

Nice find, thanks for sharing!

Glad this is out so everyone can calm down. Haha

AWD and MT is what I prefer but most likely won't happen

I’m closing this thread until we get more of the interview from the full text of the article.

CAR elected to add the interview teaser to the top of a page that contains a summary of all of the past information they’ve published about the G80 M3. Unfortunately, as xlover points out, some of that is inaccurate/misleading. Perhaps Flasch revealed more in the interview that can support or refute some of those claims, but we won’t know until we see it.

In the meantime, let’s not read too much into the small part of the interview that CAR did reveal. In particular, while it is great to have confirmation of the MT, notice that he used the word “pure” that we have been hearing over the past few months, and *did not* state that the RWD/MT model would have the same power output as the “standard” and/or Competition models. It still might, but until this is confirmed let’s not jump to conclusions.
