Even with xDrive, driving in the snow on Pilot Sport tires is terrible
I had my first commute in snow this morning with my M340i xDrive and it was an absolute nightmare. I wish my sales guy would have told me the car came with Pilot Sport tires. Who the hell wants those in Michigan?

All of my previous cars factory tires were terrible in the snow even though they were all season and way more expensive than non OEM tires. I am about to put on Conti Extreme Contact all seasons on my car and keep my factory summer tires to put back on once my lease is up and hopefully the new tires will be as good as they have been on my previous cars.
I ordered my car and the reason I went with the summer tire package was that I wanted the staggered wheel/tire set up and raised top speed limiter. I knew I was going to have to order new tires in the fall. It was the price I was willing to pay for a wider rear wheel. Unfortunately you didn’t know and the dealer didn’t tell you. |

xDrive is a beast in snow as long as you have proper tires. Summers will suck in snow regardless of that AWD system you are running.

Umm, you bought a semi-performance version of the car and didn't bother to research the types of tires it had to offer let alone check before it started snowing? I don't see how this is on the sales guy. Have some common sense.

All season tires are not good enough neither in summer nor in winter.
I would never put a thing like this on my car. Real summer tires for summer and adequate winter tires for winter, no compromises. |

xDrive doesn’t replace proper tires. Should have saved money on xDrive and gotten proper tires instead.

And if you think xDrive with high performance summers are a joke in the snow, try pilot sports in the winter with rear wheel drive. You'll be in for a real treat..

The dealer said they never order cars with summer tires since we’re in Michigan. He was surprised. |

Did you know it's not even recommended to put weight on them when temps are below 20F? https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...Pilot+Sport+4S "Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle. Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Max Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. Compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced." I'd bet much of that is CYA warranty-speak from Michelin. But I don't take that advice lightly since tires are so critical for safety. I was well-aware of the tires when I bought my M340i, and my SA pointed it out too and encouraged me to have a plan for winter. And this is in south-central Illinois where having dedicated winter tires is somewhat rare. I'm surprised a Michigan dealer wouldn't be all over that, especially since BMW has winter wheel/tire packages that they should be happy to sell you. (FWIW, my PS4S's are in storage at the dealer. SottoZero3's are awesome.) Last edited by Delta5; 11-11-2019 at 11:03 AM.. |

I'm in Toronto and the majority of M340i models sitting on the lots have summer tires. Anyways my point was that it's crazy that you bought a car without knowing the kind of tires were on it. It literally takes one look at them to know. And just as an FYI the all season option wouldn't have been great in a Michigan winter either. Really you should have invested in a winter set regardless of what they came with.

Up to this point, had you never looked at your tires?

Man sorry to say but, what kind of driver of high performance car doesn't know what tires are on there? Especially in Michigan, you should be running a proper winter tire.
I want to say the dealer did you dirty, but you also played yourself here. |
