M340d opinions

Hi all,

Hoping to receive my M340d mid April. I have to admit to having some doubts over my decision. I came out of an M2, and for work/ mileage reasons changed to a really nice spec 320d M sport. Great car but I miss the performance.

So with my mileage for work still being relatively high I thought the M340d ticks all the boxes for my needs. Work aside though I would have bought the M340i as I think that is the one to have.

Have a made a mistake and am I going to be left underwhelmed..?

Quite the opposite - the M340d feels monstrously quick in the real world. The only thing it won't really deliver on is sound, but even for a diesel it sounds pretty good.

What annual mileage will you be doing roughly?

Definitely not a mistake if you love that diesel surge and I guess it depends on your predictions for diesel popularity/resale if you’re buying outright. I’d never buy a diesel again living in the South East and I do just buy them rather than any lease/PCP type plans. Plus I do love the sound and smoothness of the petrol 6.

I have a 340d probably the best car I have owned, I test drove the 340i as well still preferred 340d

Thanks for the feedback. I can live without the sound, the doubts are probably due to not having owned a quick diesel before and not knowing what exactly to expect I suppose .. there's also not much out there online.. mileage wise 15,000 per year but that may go up or down slightly in the year so I wanted to strike the right balance with fuel consumption/performance.

Yeah, no denying the petrol sounds amazing which adds to the experience for sure. My car will be PCP which seems to work for me.

That's good to hear, how did it compare in terms of power delivery ? Top end is where the petrol will have advantage I would think due to gearing and the diesel shifting earlier ?

Joe Achilles did a review a couple of months ago that’s worth a watch. He’s driven both and reckoned the M340d was the better car most of the time.

I went for the M340i just because I’d had diesels for so long I just wanted a petrol car whilst you can still get one!
