Lightbulb [WIP] Upgrading 8.8" screen to 10.25"

Hi everone!

I just bought a used G20, which is one of the earlier models and has the Live Cockpit Plus (6U2) option, which in March 2019 meant it was made with the 8.8" screen with iDrive 6 and the digital/analog dials.

To be frank the screen size is generally adequate, but the thick borders really do bother me so, let's try to change that by installing a larger screen

In theory, I need to replace the screen with the larger one and code the car to the larger screen/resolution and that should be it. The previous-gen X5 has a 10.25" and ID6, which tells me it's compatible.

Will be posting updates how that goes and what steps I had to take, in case someone else wants to try it too.

Notes so far:
- Screen part number: 65508798742
- Ensure the 10.25" screen is touch, during the chip shortage some were just not made with touch. For CarPlay it's a must.

Cheers

Hi Faruk,
I hope you're doing well! Congrats on the nice retrofit.

I have a 2021 G20 with iDrive 7 MGU headunit, Live Cockpit Plus (Analog Dials + 5.1" Display) and 8.8" Small touchscreen.

Can you please share with me which part number did you order, and from where did you manage to order it?
Also, can you explain which parameters did you code or change.
Thanks a lot dear.

Hello,
Part number that I purchased was 879874204.
There is multiple part numbers actually depending on production year. Please consider about LHD/RHD and rest should be normally ok.
For coding there is 2 items;
-display resulation
-display size
I will share exact names when I connect the car again

The 10.25” display arrived, however fitting it on the ENTRYNAV2 (ID6, Way Maps) head unit, proved to be impossible. After installing it and coding the car to the 10.25” screen size, I just kept getting NO SIGNAL on the screen.

So as it stands right now, upgrading from the 8.8” display to 10.25” is only possible on the MGU head units (ID8, ID7).

If you have the ENTRYNAV2 headunit, you are out of luck.

Part No. of the 8.8” Display: 6550 8717540 04
Part No. of the 10.25” Display: 6550 8798742 04

I do not know what the reason is, why it won’t work but if someone can offer an explanation, that would be great.

suchpro Faruk Thank you for the guidance and advices.

Yesterday I successfully installed the new screen and was able to code it using BimmerCode.
New display looks really nice and very sharp, but I noticed that when switching to Android Auto, the resolution/sharpness drops.
I don't know if it's on Smartphone side or something that need to be coded on headunit. On smartphone side, I changed video resolution to "up to 1920x1080" in Android Auto developer mode, but didn't make any noticeable change.

The low resolution issue that resulted in blurry Android Auto is now also fixed by coding WLAN parameters.

- Which iDrive version do you have ? 6 or 7?
- Do the screen you're swapping to have the same size as the original ?
- Part numbers of both screen?

Hey,

i just picked up a g22, that has the has the 8.8" screen with iDrive 7 and the digital/analog dials. I am interested in upgrading to the 10.25 screen and according to my VIN i have the MGU unit that is needed:
Vehicle information
Series: G22 (4 M440I XDRIVE (USA) USA)
I-Level(factory) S18A-20-11-520
I-Level(current) S18A-23-03-560
head_unit HU_MGU

I purchased a used 10.25 screen (along with the fully digital instrument cluster P/N: 62105A2FC70) that was confirmed to work for my vehicle (P/N: 65509826555) and would need to be "virginized" via coding. When the screen was plugged in and coded by the coder it stayed blank, didn't turn on in any capacity. Any advice or solutions?

Once you connect via BimmerCode, you go to "Headunit" > Select Expert Mode (a backup will be created) > In the search bar search for DISPLAY > then code the following parameters as follow :
- CID_DISPLAY_RES : 1920_720
- CID_DISPLAY_SIZE : 10_25
- DISPLAY_VARIANTE : breites_display

If you also find this parameters you must change them as well :
- CID_DISPLAY_RES_2021 : 1920_720
- CID_DISPLAY_SIZE_2021 : 10_25

Then go back and click Code

The headunit will reboot, and the screen may turn on with black display (turn off the light and see if LCD Backlight is on) if so, it's a good Sign. Leave the car for an hour or two, then go back and check if it works, if not revert to the backup created previously, and do the same steps again.

Another trick if don't work, keep all parameters as explained above and change only this one
- CID_DISPLAY_RES_2021 : 1920_960
If it show a cropped image it's Ok. Leave it like this for few hours then go back and change it to 1920_720.

For me it didn't recognize the screen from the first trial. Let me know the outcome

Any luck on the retrofit? I have a 2020 330i with the 8.8in screen and id6. Am looking at upgrading it to the 10.25in and am wondering how that would be done. Thanks

Unfortunately it's not possible. For G20 you can only find a single version of the 10.25" screen, which is for MGU. Now the fundamental problem is that the MGU screen resolution is 1920x720 but ID6 Head Unit can only output 1440x540. So when you plug the screen in, it will not work.

I guess until somebody figures out a way to hack this or an aftermarket 10.25" with 1440x540 resolution comes out, we're stuck with the 8.8" screen.

As someone looking to purchase a G20 2021 - 2023 M340i, how can I tell from the pictures on websites if its the 8.8" or 10.25" screen? Is there a certain package I should look out for? Prefer to get with the 10.25" from factory (if I can). Thanks.

Yes, zoom in as close as you can on the screen and look on the sides of the screen. There is significantly more black/dead space on the side for the smaller screen. On the larger screen, the right side of it ends at the end of the right a/c vent lever. The shorter one ends in the middle of it. I hope that helps.

Hi,

Asking you about the G20 screen upgrade you did, can you share additional details on how it went and if its worth it for the extra 1.5 inch money ratio?

Thanks
