Maybe another daft question, I'm full of those, but I take it the Eye 3.0 dashcam requires at least a bare bones Connected Drive subscription or you'd loose all functionality in the app.

Could be wrong but don't think the Advanced Eye app has anything to do with Connected Drive, I think it's a completely separate entity?

I stand by to be corrected by anyone with better knowledge!

Reckon that 1 series you mentioned is a 2.0 as the rear camera was more a matchbox size as opposed to the 3.0's tube of Polos!
Yeah I think it is a 2.0 as the front and rear look the same style, not as you say a "tube" for the rear

Interesting! So the camera has it's own internet connectivity? I was thinking it would utilise the cars wi-fi and then the cars built in sim to connect to the internet?

It does not connect to the internet, it uses bluetooth to connect to your mobile you can then view or download/save recordings

Ah, OK so with a bluetooth connection, the distance between the car and your phone would be a limiting factor? If I'm up in the office say, and the car is a distance away in the car park.

Think it will be like any bluetooth device, needs to be powered on and limited range.

I don’t think this dashcam (unlike many others) has remote viewing / alerts.

But it wouldn’t be able to use the car’s built in wifi because that’s deactivated when parked up.

I'm not sure how much flexibility WRT installation the dealership will offer. Attached are the fitting instructions for the ACE 2.0 - there are specified dimensions governing the positions of the cameras. FWIW, I can't see my non-Pro ACE 3.0 cameras at all from the driver's seat.

I've also attached a link to an old video of an ACE 2.0 installation, albeit not a 3 series, which might interest you. I was staggered how much trim they remove!

Ah, yes, I was assuming that the Car Eye 3.0 Pro would offer remote viewing and alerts, and of course an internet connection would be required for that.

So remote unlocking with the MyBMW app works with Bluetooth as well then. Got it. I doubt I'll ever use that function TBH, unless I was to accidentally lock the key in the car or something and didn't have access to the spare key.

Isn't it the case that the car must have an "always on" Internet connection in order for the MyBMW App's Vehicle Finder and Remote 3D View (for cars withg the necessary hardware/software) features to work?

If that is the case, then it is disappointing that BMW didn't get the App developers to include an alert facility for the dashcam's parking mode.

Actually, no. That uses the eSIM in the car, which is always active. It's the wifi that powers down when the car is locked. And external devices (like a dashcam) don't have access to the eSIM for data.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time for me as last Wednesday a damage only collision has left me waiting for a bodyshop insurance repair way north of £1500 and a car 'off the road' until it can get sorted.
Had I had a dashcam fitted the expected 'knock for knock' outcome would have been very different and I wouldn't be looking at forfeiting my £500 excess.
'C'est la vie' as they say.....fecking annoying I say!

Anyway as a result of this and not wanting to hijack the Op's thread here I am now seriously considering 'shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted' attitude and installing a dash cam and hope any questions I have would be relevant supportive to xDrive320D"s original post.

I have no desire to fit anything other than the BMW Advanced Eye 3.0 or 3.0 Pro for personal reasons and will probably get a second one installed in my wife's 220i into the bargain.

sjb993 kindly attached spec sheets for both versions in an earlier post and I thank you for that. I noticed that both come supplied with a 32GB memory card but they have the capacity to accept a memory card up to 128GB.
Does anyone know how long it takes for the 32GB card to 'fill up' and then start to overwrite itself?

The front and rear videos are stored in separate MPEG4 files. For driving recordings they are 1 minute long, and the file sizes are:- front 127.9 Mbytes rear 71.3 Mbytes. For parking recordings they are 20 seconds long, and the file sizes are:- front 29.4 Mbytes rear 15.7 Mbytes.

So by my reckoning, a 32 Gbyte memory card will give you 160 minutes of recorded driving. I've got a 128 Gigabyte card in mine.

Many thanks for that!
Where I'm going with this is if an allegation is made against you but only several days after the event then whether or not you're still likely to have the footage on the memory card to assist to rebuff any allegation. I suppose the thing to do would be if 'an incident' occurred that you considered could be a future allegation then download and save the footage as soon as possible after the event and then at least you've got it to hand?

Probably explains why the police always appeal to other motorists for any dash cam footage as soon as an incident is reported in the media no doubt aware of the fact useful footage could be quickly lost.

I'm pretty sure you can lock any videos you want to save so that they don't get overwritten.

I have ordered front and rear car eye 3 to be fitted to mine as and when it gets to the repair shop - makes sense as so much of the interior needs sorting (another story)
It has the functionality I want, just the standard, do not need the 'pro' as anything I want will be downloaded.
With the fitted 'Drive Recorder' you can save 20 seconds before and after an 'event' by pushing the camera button on the console. I *think* it automatically does this in the case of an impact.
With regard to downloading footage from the camera - my last one (made by the same company as BMW now use) actually made it's own 'WiFi bubble' in the car, by pushing a small button on the camera itself. It then says 'Activating WiFi' to which you then connected your device to. If nothing connects after a short time, it de-activates itself.
This allowed the app to download any footage you wanted, and also review whatever was on the card.
I am assuming the same will happen with this one.
The only feature that I didnt like on the old dashcam was the warning about 're-formatting' the inserted card to maintain its functionality (this obviously wipes everything on it)
It was a synthetic female voice that just went on and on and on every time you started the car. It was seriously annoying.
I do hope BMW have written something different or made it an automatic thing - with just one warning it was about to re format.

Any particular make of 128GB memory card?
I've tended to stick with Sandisk and they're not extortionate on good old Amazon.
Are they normal size memory cards not the micro jobbies?
