245/40/19 PS4S installed - rubbing only on front driver side

Cross post from general forum

2021 RWD and had the stock squared setup running with 225/40/19 pirelli all season RFTs until this past Saturday.

Upgraded to 245/40/19 PS4S squared setup. It looks like the driver side front tire is pretty much touching the strut vs some clearance on the passenger side front tire.

Saw countless posts here and on fb group about people running 245/40s without any rubbing on stock suspension. It's not making any sense to me that the tire would rub only on one side, and not on the other.

Has anyone run into this issue before?

Tl;Dr - put 245/40 PS4S on. Front left tire rubs when turning right (no rubbing at full lock). No rubbing on front right tire. Possible suspension issue?

Do you have adaptive suspension? I do which I'm told makes the housings a bit larger diameter.

I'll take another peak under the car tomorrow to check. I'm only at about 300 miles but I'll double check.

I think I know what's going on. The spring cover on one side hangs lower than the other. Attached is left spring cover which is almost sitting on top of the tire. Vs right spring cover which is clearly higher up and has more clearance (hence no rub).

You should go with 245/35

I'm guessing you have found it. I went out and peaked at my setup and the only thing I found to be pretty close on tolerances was the spring perch mount. I have a bit more space than you have showing.

It is for sure tight, but I'm not rubbing on my setup. I'm sorry to hear you are having the issue.

Would it be possible for you to click pictures? I'm having my local dealership look at the springs tomorrow to understand why one perch mount is lower than the other.

Just had 245/40/19 ps4s installed on the front two wheels of my rwd. I too have rubbing on the driver side. Going to have these wheels put on the back for now and will either swap the remaining two tires for 225/40/19s or get spacers.

What size spacers would I need?

Hey Mike,

Got the my Michelin A/S tires installed(Square - 245/40/19) 2 weeks ago. No rubbing as far as I can tell however it is close but not as close as yours..Did they ever figure out why one is lower than the other?

One thing I've noticed is there are random thump/clunk/click noise coming from the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. This occurs completely randomly and on flat road. The wheel has been balanced so I'm not sure what the issue I may be having is. Going back to the tire shop and I'll report of any interesting findings.

EDIT:: Pictures came out sideways..not sure why

This is how my front tires look with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 in 245/40/19. The tire is really close to the spring cover.

Does this mean when I hit even a small bump, the tire is hitting the spring cover?

It already looks like it's hitting the spring perch in the 2nd pic, there seems to be rub marks visible.

For comparison on stock vs your tire size, see attached pic.

Yeah a random click noise is exactly how I would describe it. I get that too although lately there's been much less of it. Your pictures look exactly like my passenger front tire, where there's just enough clearance and no rubbing. Sadly my driver front spring sits a bit lower and touches the tire when turning in.

Does the spring housing height issues apply to the xdrive model? I noticed the Op mentioned RWD.

I really want to go with Firestone Fire Hawk Indy 500 245/40/19 all the way around on my 793i wheels with adaptive suspension.

With such narrow clearance between the tyre and the spring perch, anything sticking to the tyre.... stick, stone, general road debris will hit the perch and make a noise as it is dislodged. Different noises depending on the material of the item, and totally random occurences.

Haven't heard any noises. And I've driven very short distances on gravel roads too.

2021 M340i xdrive with adaptive suspension, kept OEM rims 793i style and no spacers.

Installed today July 20, 2022:
Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 245/40/19 on all four wheels @ 38 psi
Replaced Pirelli P7 Cinturato All Weather Run flats 225/40/19

Appointment in 2 days with a really well-known Alignment guy for a four-wheel alignment. Will provide more feedback soon.

Have images of before and after to share but this forum is terrible for sharing images.

If you installed spacers you wouldn't rub anymore. It would push the wheel out

I’m going those exact same tires soon on my xdrive, how are you liking them?

DO IT, DO IT!!! Love those Firehawks, the feel and steering are massively different.

Prior to the alignment what [myM340](contact:572696) said in this thread, yes you hear random stuff caught on the tires that makes contact with components that are close.

Since the alignment a lot of odd noises are gone. Took the car on a massive hustle up some twisties this weekend.

If anyone wants images or alignment before and after specs please PM me.

I run 13mm front and 15mm rears. You can measure it and see if it would clear with having the wheel 13mm further out.
