Question M340i build - Mexico vs. Germany

Any difference in quality & reliability between the 2?

Can't find a definitive answer either for what options will guarantee a Germany build.

Thanks in advance.

I believe all M340s for the North American market are now only built in Mexico. I have a "22 which was a german build, but only because at the time, the Oxide Gray paint option I chose ($1,500 individual option) was only done in Germany. It was about a 6 month wait. The only two individual paints currently available for $1,500, Dravit Grey or Tanzanite Blue II, are now done in Mexico. Don't know whether Mexico can do "full" individual paints (probably $4-6k options).

As far as I understand it, all 3 series are manufactured in Mexico with exception of the M3 which is still manufactured in Germany. M2s are also manufactured in Mexico.

Physically, there are no differences between Germany and every other plant worldwide. Every plant is AG rated and BMW has the data to back up their build quality at each plant. It is somewhat difficult to compare German plants to other countries plants because for the most part, each plant builds different cars. USA has the X models, Mexico has the 3 series, 5 series and M2. While Germany handles all of the M cars/ individual cars.

If you want a German build the 4 series is built in Germany. Its one of the reasons I went for the M440i GC X-Drive or the M340i XDrive.

Canadian market still gets 3 series from Germany.

My 23 LCI production September 2022 was built in Germany.

Not sure if anything changed since but from what I recall - US gets 3 series from Mexico and we get our 3 series from Germany.

Back to the original question though - I doubt there would be much difference- these are all BMW trained manufacturing plants with strict quality control.

My 2022 330i xDrive was built in Mexico (3MW first 3 letters/digits of VIN).

I don’t see any differences in quality in my 330i (German built) vs my M340i (Mexico built)

One thing I appreciate in any vehicle is lack of squeaks / rattles....Hate them. Never had a German built Porsche or BMW that wasn't solid. I was a bit concerned that my '21 M340, built in Mexico, would not have that solid German feel. No worries...2 years later and it remains solid and problem-free.

I owned a Alabama built Mercedes, 2 Mexican built VW's and now a Mexican built SQ5 (which I am trading in for the G20). There is a slight difference in quality, but it is what it is. My SQ5 is a 2021 with 14k miles and there are a few creaks that are developing.

Ordered new in '21 my M340 was a Mexico build and almost 3 years later, not a squeak, rattle or click anywhere.

This. Add the incredibly useful hatchback on the GC, and the better interior, and its an easy choice to go for the Gran Coupe.

My g80 that I bought brand new had a very annoying rattle coming from behind the vents inside the dash within the first 200 miles.
So being built in Germany doesn’t mean much.

My x3 m40i 2024 feels much better built than my g80.

I agree... these days, there's practically no difference in quality just because one is assembled in Germany vs. another one from Mexico or South Africa.

Having said that... the majority of people who buy BMWs, Mercedes and even Lexus are not just buying a car. It the name and more often than not, people do care about where a BMW or Mercedes is assembled. Ask any woman if she's be willing to buy a $6000 to $30000 fora LV bag if it's manufactured in India, Mexico, China or another similar country. Or ask a guy who is a watch freak if he's willing to pony up $50,000 for a Rolex made in Thailand.(even if it's 100% identical in quality)

This right here.

Being built in XYZ country means absolutely nothing.

Some of the least reliable and least durable cars are built in USA and still are worse than something built in Mexico or any other country.
