Question G20 M-Sport 12v power outlet will not power tyre inflator but it does power my phone

A few weeks ago I had to replace the 20 amp fuse for the 12v front power outlet and now when I plug my 12v tyre inflator into the 12v socket it doesn't power it but my phone charger works in the socket.

I assumed there is a fault with the inflator so I plug it into my wife's DS3 and it works just fine. I try the inflator in my G20 again, turning the connector in the socket as I go but it still doesn't power it. The phone charger still works though!

Any ideas please?

Cheers

I know for 12v USB adapters the socket can be very 'fussy' about which one's work. I have one that doesn't work in the BMW even though it works in every other car

It's not a Ring tyre inflator by any chance is it as they ended up modifying the plug on them as I think they only had one spring connector on certain models, the newer ones now have two.

Interesting my 12v by the cup holders has never worked! Or at least won't power my dashcam so I'm guessing it's dead. Not got round to slinging it in for a warranty fix.

The fuses go on the 12v sockets fairly easily on BMWs. Some have more than one fuse so could be that?

Here's an example of two different types of adapters. The one on the right won't work in the front 12V socket but it's OK in the back row socket. The one on the left work in both front and back sockets.

My compressor works in the boot socket and rear socket but not the front 12V socket.

It's not strange at all. The front and back are just different types of 12V sockets. One is cigarette lighter socket and the other is accessory socket. Some adapters fit both and some only fit the accessory one.

How Are Cigarette Lighters and Accessory Sockets Different?
https://www.lifewire.com/cigarette-l...-socket-534783

"Is It a Cigarette Lighter Socket or 12V Accessory Socket?

Unless you want to look up the specs and get out a micrometer, the best way to find out whether you’re dealing with a cigarette lighter socket or an accessory socket is to check your owner’s manual or contact the dealership. The two do look slightly different, but it's a difference measured in millimeters.

You also can’t tell whether or not a socket is designed to work with a cigarette lighter simply based on the fact that it didn't come with one. While most dash-mounted sockets are still designed to accept cigarette lighters, you shouldn't just assume that it does.

The general rule of thumb is that if your dash has multiple sockets, one of them will usually be a cigarette lighter, and the others will probably be accessory sockets. In that same vein, additional sockets located under the dash, in the center console, and elsewhere in the vehicle, are usually dedicated accessory sockets."

I had the same with the cigarette lighter 12v and took it into the dealer - Turns out, theres no fault at all, exactly as Hamera says.
One of my 12v usb chargers worked and the other doesn't. Boot one works with both.

My Nextbase dashcam won’t work in the front 12v socket, without a lot of ‘jiggling’ and then won’t stay powered for long anyway. So I gave up and used a USB adaptor in the socket and the dash am now works fine

Yeah mine is the same, it’s been working for a few days now after ‘jiggling’

Have you got a link to the USB adapter used? Don’t think mine came with one . Mine is a Nextbase camera as well....

My cheapy tyre pump from Halfords works fine in both front and rear 12v sockets.

I'd post a link to it, but they don't seem to sell it anymore, but it's just the same as this one.

or this one from the AA, in a different case

Yeah my tyre compressor works fine in our G21 and G22 in both sockets, seems Nextbase shaved a few thou’ off their power plug

Took me a fair bit of time to route the Nextbase cable through trim and up to the drivers side of the windscreen only to discover the dilemma with the power lead . It’s not a very clean look either, so it’s getting changed as soon as the new cable arrives
