Some encouraging data for the performance of the G80/G82 BMW M3/M4

I quickly spreadsheet-ed the data from several existing performance cars along with (some assumptive) data on the 2021 M3.

Of course - there's MANY assumptions regarding 0-60 times based on tires, driver, torque, weather, surface, HP, and weight - so by no means am I claiming you can make any precise conclusions from this. That being said, the data is directionally encouraging.

Notes:

- Assuming the weight of the 2021 M3/M4 is similar to the F80/F82 generation (big assumption, keep that in mind) then it will have the best power-to-weight ratio of the group. Both in HP and Torque.

- If you graph the following data a few more insights arise. The graph looks pretty linear except for 2 vehicles.

The Tesla Model 3P is faster than it should be (via interpolation). Assumption is because it isn't wasting time changing gears. Also - all ICE cars have launch control which is arguably a system to put the engine in a place to provide as "instant" of torque as possible on start. However, it isn't as perfect as delivering "instant" torque as electric motors especially after a gear change. Hence - another advantage for T3P.

The 2020 BMW M4 is slower than it should be (via interpolation) in this data. Assumption (not much of one) is that it's overpowered for it's RWD delivery. If you've driven one, you know it spins it's tires a lot. If the 2020 M4 was AWD, per interpolation it would be roughly 3.4-3.5 for 0-60.

- Vehicle weights and 0-60 times were gathered from official data (and some more realistic tests). Weight of vehicles matters a lot with options, etc. 0-60 matters a lot with conditions. Again, treat the data as "ballpark" correct. The data is all below - feel free to modify where I got things wrong.

- Even with assumptions, this is very very exciting. The power output of the S58 engine is known and we know it'll be in the new G80/G82 M3/M4. Hence we just need to guess the weight. If the G80/G82 is the same weight as the F80/F82 it's the best of the bunch. If it gains even a little, the M8 Competition beats it on weight-to-torque. That being said - coming close to the M8 Competition is a good thing.

- Because the M3/M4 is very light.. even adding a 180lb passenger skews poorly. Adding 4 passengers skews more poorly. That being said, I mostly drive alone and I'm willing to go on a diet.

- Ballpark, assumptive, hand-wavy conclusion: The CURRENT M3/M4 would be doing mid-3 second 0-60 if it was all wheel drive (even with weight for an AWD system). The 2021 should be similar. If they can get the weight down (which I know is hard, but I also know they'll be focused on making it happen) you could see very low 3's.

A couple thoughts on the OP:

Looking at the competition The F80 was impressively light when comparing to other brands. Personally I am hoping they focus on driver involvement against competition like the Giulia Quadrifoglio, rather than the cars on that list, but I am sure they will need to address all the completion. In development, they need to satisfy drivers like myself that want a fun handling car with a manual and others who want 0-60 times.

I personally like shorter gearing on a manual and would gladly take a slower 0-60 time as result. An overly tall second gear can really alter a 0-60 time. RWD is also more fun, but will result in a worse 0-60 time.

Weight, is seemingly going up on all brands across the board, I would not expect an = weight on an AWD G80 vs RWD F80, obviously TBD. If BMW can deliver a G80 Xdrive at that weight, it will be highly impressive, the fact that there is a RWD and AWD variant makes the reveal that much more interesting, IMO.

Great write up OP!

Not meaning to go off track here but If we're talking 1320 Personally I believe the G80 M3 will run 10's out the box bone stock with a poor driver and I also believe within the first 3 months of being available someone will put it into the 9's!

I'm very excited and looking forward to owning one, based on what I see going on with the F90 M5, M8, A90 supra and the current X3M/X4M the new M3 which I view as somewhat of an offspring of those 4 platforms as far as drivetrain and tech is concerned will be a MONSTER!

To me that's a lot of factors be considered. Without reading what you wrote I would have guessed close to the M5 which low 3's 0-60 is about right

FWIW, after its 2 OTA updates, the Model 3P has ~500 hp and ~525 lb. ft. of torque.

I wouldn't exactly call the M3/M4 (last model or new model) "very light".... and unfortunately in order to drive or enjoy your car you need to get in it, lol. You're splitting hairs.

The M3/M4 has MORE than enough power to weight for ANY driving situation. Does it really matter if you get to 60 in 3.4 seconds or 3.7 seconds?

Far more important is that the car exhibit impeccable handling while remaining comfortable and smooth, that the engine pulls smoothly off idle to redline in a linear fashion, that the jerkiness of both F series manual and dual clutch transmissions be a thing of the past, and that the mediocre exhaust note be addressed. At near 80 thousand dollars, the rattles, squeaks, buzzes and such of the outgoing model are an embarrassment. Lets fix that too while we are at it.

Back to weight.

My Porsche 993 weighs 2950 pounds. It has just under 300hp. I'm a BMW guy but that air cooled Porsche is by FAR the best car I have ever driven.

0-60 meh getting sucked up with Tesla marketing. Sure 0-60 is neat but life starts after 60.

the x3 m is a good 300 lbs more than a x3 m40i. That doesn't bode well at all for this being anywhere close to as light as the previous model. i personally think in AWD versions this car will be 4000 lbs or more.

BMW knows itll sell they aren't going to put the effort in to make it lighter unless its some crazy CSL version you pay $100k for
