Why look at the M8? M5 never had a power dome.

Anyone else see the latest car and driver article? They report the G80 will maintain the 7 DCT which is music to my ears. Lookin at the shift knob and pattern on the just released 8GC, the one spied in the g80 is def different and has the up and down arrows next to the P button which would be the increase/decrease shift speed/harshness like on the current models. Think this, plus the shift gate pattern is also not the same as all the other new models with a ZF 8, bodes well for the arguments of it maintaining a DCT IMO.

As much as I would love the transmission to be DCT, that paddle shifter is sadly quite a concrete proof that it will be 8 speed ZFat.

I know I'm playing into their bean counters' hands, but I am looking at current CS models. S58 is virtually a same engine but with lower compression (possibly more lag vs S55) and unrebuildable cylinder head (closed deck). I think this is a direct influence of join development with Toyota who might have given them JZ engines' blueprints.

The ZF8 for the G80 will likely have similar features as in the M5 which include up and down arrow buttons to select between 3 different shift speeds.

Engine, yes but I’m sure the G80 will be closer to the M5 than the X3M in terms of the rest of the drive line. The X3M do not have the rwd only mode of the M5 and I’m sure the G80 will follow the M5 and not the X3M in this regard. I also think the G80 as the M5 will include more weight reduction than the X3M.

I don't want my M3 to drive like the M5 boat..

AMG GT variants have tranaxle DCT, front engine, rear wheel drive car with 500-580 bhp and that has incredible traction. BMW is being lazy with creating high powered RWD machine.

M3 needs to respond to EVERY user input instantaneously and should not feel like it's missing a few revs up top, which unfortunately the ZF will likely feel. F90 M5 had impressive power no doubt, but its transmission response even on the max setting was sluggish compared to DCT on M2.

I hate the fact that they are planning to make a sedan version of X3M. M3 was and always should be the signature, standalone model of the M range without compromise. Halo models are not about ROI.

F90 M5 is extremely agile for his weight!!!!!
I can't believe how could hide that much weight.
It almost handles like F80 ( again almost )
I had every M3 MT and I love the engagement but never liked the traction issues when is cold or rain.
This is why I got the F90 M5 and I must say it has superb traction even after modifying to 850HP
As far as transmission goes it's really good but I need mine MT and that's why I am going to G80 MT

It's the whole package .. power dome and wide hips add to the "look back after locking and walking away" factor .... obviously not the most important ... same with M style mirrors, CFRP roof...but it all adds up!

I thought the power dome hood started with the E8X cars due to clearance issues with the V8. I can't see any power domes on M3s prior to the E8X.

You mean E90/92??? There was no E80

E46 had very small one ( see picture below ) but yes you are correct the E90/92 was the main reason needed to bulge more because of the 1st V8 in M3 and people loved them so much that it came to F80/82 and it will become trademark to all M3/4'

to each his own. i personally prefer a bit understated looks with great performance which i believe the M3/4 will deliver on. i can see where one would like or prefer hood bump and other traditional design looks of these cars. imho i would like if they kept them but it wouldn't keep me from getting the car

Yes, I meant the E9X. I don't know what happened there.

I never noticed it in the E46. Maybe because everyone I know who has one got it in black or white and maybe it's less noticeable in those colors.

I don't think the E36 had one.

The visibility issue was caused by the object between the steering wheel and the back of the driver's seat.
