The only reason the Toyota Supra is using bmw’s engine is because Toyota funded the z4/Supra platform and it’s a dedicated platform. I see no reason why bmw would let Toyota/Lexus use their engine for anything else. |

Unfortunately, this seems like the trend we're going with, but I'm definitely not on board. There's far more to me than just pure hp and torque. Not counting fuel efficiency, I'd gladly pick my US spec S52 with only 240 hp and 240 ft/lbs over a turbocharged 4 cylinder which will have that amount plus plenty of tuning potential. Things like engine smoothness, character, sound and even maintenance matter far more to me.
Personally, I'd rather just go electric than having a 4 pot.

I'm glad my vehicles are still I-6 and V8 but as soon as someone figures out a way to tow 8000 pounds continuously for 300+ miles with an electric vehicle and be able to charge it in 10 minutes or less those cylinders will be gone too.

Imagine the future W224 Mercedes S-Class with four cylinder engines only, or electric.
The balance shaft will be *really* good in this imagined W224. |

not a fan of most of these modern engines with laggy turbos and redlines below 8k for a weekend ride. its fine for a daily use since you can be in the meaty part of the powerband while cruising and don't need to shift. but when i'm hitting corners i don't want to wait for a turbo to spool up.
that's why my m3 will continue to be daily, and why im skipping over the 488/720/570s in favor of a 9000rpm gt3 for my weekend ride right now.

What you are most likely experiencing is the transmission shifting down 2 or more gears in response to you flooring the throttle at low RPM. If it's a DCT, it probably only has the next lowest gear selected and whether it's a slush box or DCT, it's going to get a little confused and have to shift down a few gears, unless you were already running relatively high RPM, which is unlikely unless you are driving around in manual paddle-shift mode all the time. If you were say at 2000 and held it in gear, it's going to pull just fine, not as good as at 4K with all the HP to back it up, but it's still going to make massive torque and pull out of a hole. That and the throttle mapping due to the mode you are in. People thinking that turbos tapping directly off of the block with small twin-scrolls are "lagging" like old 930 where you had to get up to 4K before the thing would make any torque are mistaken.

But the IS with a straight six might be a good cruiser which is more of the target audience for Lexus. Lexus sells enough cars, at least in the US, that it doesn't need to compete directly with the Germans; it has its own very profitable place. |

No, they're sticking with 4's, 6's and 8's with various power set ups.
