BBK Upgrade Question

Hey G20 Fam,

Took delivery this past Saturday on my 2020 M330i xDrive and am loving it! Currently thinking about brake upgrades.

I'm wondering if there is a difference between the MS brakes (blue caliper) that comes equipped on M340i's as opposed to the MP BBK with red calipers?

Aside from drilled/slotted rotors, anyone know the spec difference and if the M340i MS brakes is compatible on a M330i?

Anyone? I'd imagine sponsors from BMW dealerships would have some kind of idea?

The main differences between the M340i MS vs MP brakes are the size of the front calipers and rotors - 348mm vs 374mm, respectively

Please take a look at this thread - https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1742610

Yes, based on my search on bimmercat, the M340i and 330i share the same parts for the MS brakes:

1) the 345mm MS rear brakes - https://bimmercat.com/bmw/en/parts/i...4081/appliance

2) the 348mm MS front brakes - https://bimmercat.com/bmw/en/parts/i...1283/appliance

Please note if your 330i already has the MS brakes (blue 348mm/345mm), you can also upgrade the fronts to the blue 374mm (M340i ZTK option) brakes - https://bimmercat.com/bmw/en/parts/i...1303/appliance

Thanks man, super helpful!

I don't have the MS brakes as an option, I just have the standard disc brakes on an xDrive. I'm just on the fence whether I should upgrade to the MS option brakes or the MP BBK. Also trying to understand what the costs are on the MS option compared to the MP BBK. Obviously the MP BBK is easy to find the price, but the MS option isn't readily available and still unclear all the parts needed to convert it.

There is lots of mis-information floating around regarding the G series brake options, but in the simplest answer I can give - the following is correct:

All G2x cars that come with the M Sport braking system come with a 4 pot blue Brembo front caliper - this is the smallest of all the G series 4 pot calipers and uses 348mm discs. They will also have the 345mm rear calipers.

The only exception to the rule, is the M340i - which if optioned with the track handling pack - gets upgraded to the bigger blue 4 pots which use a 374mm disc. Again, the rears are 345mm and are not upgraded vs the other G2x cars with M Sport brakes. M340i cars that didn't have the track pack selected get the 348mm fronts as default.

Therefore, if you are a M340i owner with the track package and then fit the M Performance brakes to your car, you are literally removing the identical braking system that you would be replacing it with - the only difference being red paint and dimpled / slotted discs.

If you are a regular G2x owner and opt to fit these to a car that already has the 348mm front and 345mm rear - then you are upgrading the front only, as the rears remain the same size.

If you dont have the M Sport brakes at all, then you will benefit in full from the M Performance brake upgrade.

The cheaper option is to source blue or even better the grey 374mm brake calipers on ebay etc and then buy the 4 x M Perf discs - then custom paint the 4 calipers! I have sold loads of grey calipers and its a much cheaper option.

If you want to go all out - then 395mm front is an option from G30 / G11 etc!

Thanks, very insightful and helps a lot with my decision-making.

I have a M330i xDrive without the M brakes and have been debating which route to go. I'm not planning to heavily mod for performance, probably simple bolt-ons and possibly the JB+. The whole reason I got the 330i rather than the M340i is because I live in NYC and couldn't see myself taking full advantage of what the M340i has to offer so wanted to use the cost delta between the 2 models on upgrades.

With that said, a few more questions!

1. You mention grey 374mm calipers, what chassis does that come off of?

2. You may not know the answer but do you think/know if the cost difference between the stock MS brakes (smallest - 348mm/345mm) is incremental or significant compared to the MP/M340i MS brakes?

3. Will any of the solutions you mentioned work on an xDrive?

TIA!!
