If it is proven that any of the Chinese girls on the gymnastics team who won gold is actually under 16 years old in 2008, then should she (and the team in the events in which she participated) be stripped of their gold medals?

If not, why not? And then why would anyone caught on drugs be denied the win and their medals?

Rules are rules. If you don't like the rules, change them, but not retroactively.

Yes, if in fact ANY country violated the rules in ANY sport they should give up their medals.

Who is discussing politics? This is a discussion of possible cheating in a sporting event?

Is steroids in baseball a political issue as well?

Because being small and somewhat underdeveloped for women is an advantage in gymnastics. That is why. It is easier to perform. They are 4'10 70lbs.. vs USA who are 85-95. It makes a big difference.

All the Chinese had to do was simply submit a passport to prove their age (which is a fact). The passports are 'conveniently' issued by the Chinese government (another fact) The IOC can't do anything about it because China's government "handled it" (another fact, because they came out and said so)... Give me a break.

How do you know it is not true? What is wrong with us discussing it. Yea, we are throwing accusations out there, but that's what everyone is doing because it all fits together so perfecty.

* The athletes physically resemble someone under the age of 16 (I don't care what country you are from).

* The athletes were forced into competing at a very early age

* All they needed to do was submit a passport to verify age

* The passports were issued by the Chinese government (need I say more about this)

* The IOC has said that they can't do anything about it

so what is so wrong about discussing this?

Maybe because I lived in China for almost 2 years (2005/2006/2007) and dealt with China for past 12 years?

Definitely not because I read about the crap from the USA Today...

BTW, I wasn't commenting about the cheating part -- it is very possible that any nation cheated (including the USA or China...)

My comment was toward the "Government Ordered" stuff that is not really true for some time...

I keep on reading that China "forced" these girls into gymnastics, can someone post a story or something? I'm Chinese and what I know is that girls identified as potential are given the choice to join the national program, not coerced into it.

Exactly how is a 3 year old given a choice?

My child started playing tennis at the age of 3...
I never forced her to do so...

I know many tennis players that started at early age...

Agassi started at that age and at 5 was already hitting with the Pros...

You asked for it.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/14/24833/7344

http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/...?article=23346

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...4/ai_n21089772

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=92479526

Notice the part in the last article that states that the athletes are paid a government salary...

China hosts games.... Must put on good showing... Chinese government runs athletics and pays athletes. Chinese government wants to win regardless of costs.. Chinese government issues passports, which are the only form of proof needed to verify age..

hmm

Who wants to bet dr325i will claim that the articles are not true and he knows because he has been to China?

Anyone?

Or maybe I should link you to similar Chinese articles and European articles talking shit about us?

I read the NRP article, maybe you should too.
I have seen similar "Boarding Schools" in the USA... What is your point?
What is wrong with those?

Other articles are pure political crap...

This really is a shame. My son is a competitive athlete but I could not imagine the government forcing him to participate in a program such as those described. Sports are supposed to be fun, that is why we play them.
