i watched a documentary on discovery channel, and they said that chinese athletes are picked as young as 3 years old, BUT they are not forced to participate, they are allowed to quit or walk away whenever, but the problem is usually it's the family or parents that forces their child to continue on because many believe that's their only hope for their child to bring success to the family.

soo the government do not force athletes to train and compete, it's usually the peer pressure from the family

I cannot believe the scores they gave the chinese last night on the balance beam!! The one girl did a balance check on her first move!!!!!!!! And still a 15 something? Can you say favoring?? I loved how the broadcasters laughed when she did that.
