Apple Maps and CarPlay.

When driving, I’ve always tended to use Waze or the Google Maps navigation Apps. However, whilst they work perfectly on the centre screen, there’s seems to be no visual cues displayed on the heads up display, which isn’t great.

A few days back I accidentally set my navigation home with Apple Maps and noticed arrows and roundabout exit numbers showing on the the HUD. Nothing too fancy, like lane display etc, but a help nonetheless.

My question is, should Waze and Google maps do this too? Or is it only the BMW navigation system and Apple Maps?

Cheers!

Hi,

Only Bmw Nav and Apple Maps goes to cluster panel (and head up display) on Carplay. (Not sure if cluster panel is the right word but i mean the panel infront of you, behind the steering wheel)

On Android Auto, Google Maps can go to cluster.

(On lci 3 series)

My Waze on Android Auto does HUD and cluster. However sometimes the HUD doesn't show or gets stuck. But that is such a minority of times that it's not an issue

Having said the bit about being in the cluster I never really look at it given I have HUD.

Yeah, I don’t tend to look at the instrument cluster either.

I swear that the HUD didn’t show any cues when using Waze or Google Maps. However, it looks like I need to do some testing to make sure.

That said, for the few times I’ve used Apple Maps, it seems good, as it picked up traffic and clearly showed fixed speed cameras.

My Waze on HUD doesn’t give directions or notifications. Haven’t tried Apple Maps yet. Will do today

So, on my short trip home this morning, I put all 3 to the test:
  • Google Maps - Zero heads up display
  • Waze - Zero heads up display
  • Apple Maps - No showboating, but at least a basic miles to junction, roundabout exit etc. all shown via the HUD!

Whilst Apple Maps may not show true roadworks/traffic like Waze does, I think I’ll be switching over for the longer journeys!

The drivers display in iDrive 8 has been improved if you have iPhone with Apple Maps/ android with google maps. (Pic attached)

I still like the standard BMW nav. Works well, both on the main display, drivers display, and the HUD.

I get directions on HUD from Waze and Google maps on Android, it looks crap though, not a patch on the iDrive graphics and information so never use either, just iDrive for me.

I get that the graphics/experience is far better using the iDrive system. However, on longer, more unpredictable trips, I find the traffic information is not a patch on the likes of Waze or Google.

Although the two Google products are better, the BMW nav (and the data that drives it) is shedloads better now than it was a couple of years ago.

The big convenience I find with the BMW nav is that you can quickly zoom in or out by rotating the iDrive controller and it maintains the zoom setting. I often zoom in to look for street names and then zoom back out to look at the bigger picture of the route. I also use the touch screen to move the screen view farther down the road and look for route details. It keeps that view (which can be zoomed) until I click on return to current location.

With Apple Maps, I have to zoom or move with the touch screen (no simple rotation of the iDrive controller) and then after about 30 seconds it returns to the default zoom level in Apple Maps. If I’m looking for a particular street on a busy route, or looking for a town or intersection 50 miles down the road, I might want to keep it zoomed for an indefinite time, and Apple won’t let me do that.

Apple Maps looks cartoonish on the iDrive 8 instrument cluster!

Yes, the zooming in is good. I also like the UI and the HUD display.

But I like Waze for the warnings, not that I drive over the speed limit. So I guess the best of both worlds is to let Waze run in the background (by not putting in a route) and use BMW Nav. Question is, who has the better (adaptive) routes? BMW, Waze or Google (I am on Android so don't have Apple)?

Waze has gone too far with the time saving re-routing, IMO. It'll send you off down some very weird routes just to shave 30-seconds off your journey, but your journey becomes a lot more stressful as a result.

Apple Maps has improved significantly over the last few years and hasn't gotten much attention for it, and I tend to find it updates with traffic information and ETA's faster than Google and Waze do. It has hazards, speed camera info, etc, built-in now too. That said, not all cities are as good as each other as Apple continue to improve Maps area-by-area, so its worth testing.

But I am also a fan of the BMW navigation and I agree with the comment above about how much it has improved over the last few years.
