I introduced them to the Charleston area when I bought my 530i back in 1983 - from "Critz" in Savannah. Way back then there weren't any BMW dealers in the state of South Carolina.
If any of you are old enough to hang with me, I'm the one that had a "Polaris" silver 5-speed manual with blacked out glass. Now they make them here in SC - the X3/X4/X5/X6 anyway. At one point they made the 330i/328i until those went to Mexico. True "war story": I took this 2 tonne monster and left for the airport off Wadmalaw Island one night (early morning?!?) and used it to trim trees, well, one specific 6" pine that had fallen overnight during a nasty storm and I was lucky enough to be the first encounter about 5:30AM when I noticed what at first I assumed was where they had worked on the road and left a trench - but turned out to be said pine. On the fortunate side, el Bimmer chopped it in three pieces ahd tossed the center piece up almost 5' and crushed the (Buick) Electra 225 behind me and didn't even need to be realigned. Back on the sad side, said Buick driver was happy I managed to cut a hole since he would have certainly lost his front axle - and everything else - that morning. His grill looked sad - no - defeated!?! We pulled over at the 7-11 store parking lot and inspected our rewards, and found both vehicles just needed to keep on keeping on, and he thanked me for being a "damn good driver". My 530i just kept purring and proceeded onwards to the airport for a 7 o'clock flight taking my guests back home to Atlanta. I never saw poor Deb or Ralph again. I suppose they weren't all that impressed, or at least not as much as myself and the other driver. |
