Add me to the list of owners that have experienced this. 2021 M340i here. I did a “break in” oil change at 1300 miles. Got the low oil alert at about 2500 miles. I have def been beating on it.

I have a few of these laying around the garage and topped it off with a quart

If one is tracking the car, or otherwise doing lots and lots of aggressive driving, then I can see it. Otherwise it seems too soon. Not a huge pain to add oil but I would be concerned about why it was using up oil so fast.

I realize im a year late to this thread but from what I've dealt with my car, the oil usage of course is related to how you drive your vehicle. I personally drive 90% in sport plus and have to add a quart about every 2.5k-3k miles. I work at a BMW dealership and talked to some of the techs who have confirmed with me it is normal when driving the car aggressively often. Of course take this with a grain of salt as every vehicle is different but for mine it is completely normal. Hope this helps.

I drive my car pretty aggressively.

Today, it asked for its first quart at 4200 miles.

My SA, a fellow enthusiast, recommended sticking with the 0W-20.

I had my first error at 8200 mile so the dealer did the 10k service early. Now im at 18k and the low oil error popped up again. What I dont understand is how it can go from low to max fill with 1qt added. I thought the engine holds close to 7 qts.

The error still has not gone away. Can anyone tell me how to reset the error so I dont have to keep seeing it? TIA ....

It's not empty when the warning comes. It's at the designed minimum level. (Comparable with old days oil stick min/max markings.)

^^This. It all depends how you drive the car. I personally go balls to the wall with my tuned M340i pretty often and I need at to add a quart every 2k miles. If I dial it back and dont go too aggresive the car doesn’t burn as much.

I ordered 7 liters of BMW 0w-30 LL-01FE from ECS tuning for my next change.

I think it will be best to ask MP for recommendations.

I never have the dealer change my oil since they use the 0-20W. My buddy was the senior BMW tech for many years and has had his own shop for several years now. He recommends Liqui-Moly in the 5-30W and have never had this issue. In the past I have owned the last three M5 models and never went wrong with his recommendations.

I started to receive these warnings for low oil level when the car was around 100000 km from new. till that time I usually changed the oil every 4k miles (6 k km). when the car was 110000 km the engine lost 4 from 6 cylinders and after some months sitting in the dealer, the engine was replaced under warranty. Till that time the car was not launched, but always driven hard mostly in Sport+. Even that I am from Europe, I usually use Red Line 0/30, or Ams oil 5/30. Now the car is 200000 km and is already flashed with MHD Stage 2 and xHP Stage 3, no messages for low level of oil.
Good luck

0w20 is to help with fuel economy, the same car in Germany use 5w30 since fe isn't as strict plus autobahn. Use 5w30, iirc manual also says 5w30 is fine.
