M340i Oil Mess Up

Took my M340 into the dealer for the first time for a engine oil top up. Was on a incline the other day and message popped up for a quart of oil but on flat ground it's slightly above the minimum mark so it wouldn't prompt a notification. No biggie, was actually kind of happy since a few friends of mine were getting low on a quart every 1k miles. (I'm currently at 4,500 miles burned about 3/4 quart oil.) What happened at the dealer is beyond me. Technician just grabbed a random quart of oil and filled it up when I noticed something. Bottle of oil said for Diesel engines. Taking the car in a few days for a oil change, at least the dealer owned up to the mistake and is giving me a oil change. Anyone else have stories of dealers putting the wrong stuff in the car?

No , but I bought a couple of quarts oil for top offs. Mentioned that car needed a quart before first oil change . My SA wanted me to watch and bring it in when it needs oil but that is not always convenient plus limited appointment times during covid . Also from what I have read not usually not an issue unless needing more than 1 quart between oil changes. I have heard that using 5W instead of 0W oil helps too

Yea I just went and bought a quart of Castrol 0W-40 for top ups whenever it's needed. Heard good things about it.

How do you make this level of mistake and this is your profession?!

This is why I prefer to look after my own vehicles, that way you know its getting done properly

Believe it or not, but relatively easy to mess this up, especially on new cars without dipstick to check oil level. Also, many times, the newbies fresh out of tech school are the ones doing oil changes, sometimes people still being trained.

I would say in an emergency you could use almost any oil. Like if level was at minimum and you were far from home. Or drive very gently to get oil

Oh I know, I totally get it. I used to work as a motorbike mech for free to get experience, and of course I got all the shitty jobs and did the oil etc...

Still charged the customer the same price, though!

Same here. Changed oil and tires while I was in college. You wouldn't believe what I've seen... or you would lol.

Do you know how many miles your friends m340 is at? I ask because I'm looking to upgrade from my 335i and I keep seeing the oil consumption issue on B58 more than my N55 friends. I've heard dealers say that issue goes much lower once past 10k miles. Just trying to get a feel of how big of issue this is or isn't.

Same here. It even bothers me that some techs use the good-n-tite method instead of putting everything to their exact torque. I get some techs out there can do it. Just like some restaurant waiters can take an order by memory.

He had to top up a quart every 800-1k miles, got his oil change at 5-6k i believe. Do not use 0W-20 complete garbage I have not used anything besides 0W-30 and 0W-40 and the car has not burned a single drop of oil after the break in. Even after a track day. 0W-40 FTW.

Taking the car to dealer to top off an oil was your 1st mistake. I have an extra bottle in the trunk just in case but never needed ot.

My car is at 13K miles and never went low on oil. I did change the oil at 5K and 10k miles. Not sure what your folks are doing to your cars or how you are driving them.
