Anyway, I'm in the camp of totally not seeing the similarities. The only thing they have in common to me is that their front ends look idiotic

But one looks more idiotic than the other.

Too many delusional posts regarding the new G20 looking like a jap Lexus, just open up ya eyes real wide and there is a notable difference.

Job well done BMW AG!

And Lexus has European Delivery, Performance Center Delivery, US performance driving schools, BMW Driving Experience training in Germany, various European tracks and Winter training in Sweden?

What was your prior BMW? As I wouldn't return my M4 vert or X5M early, and excited with the new G20 styling and technology will be in the future G83 (M4 vert in 3 years).

PS I converted my wife who was a former Lexus brand loyalist over to BMW- no comparison.

No they're almost the same as the GS. All the way through the L shaped lighting. VERY Lexus inspired and undeniably so.
You clearly know nothing about automobile design language.

The form language of those tail-lights is not the same.

If you think it is I'd go get your eyes examined.

Fanboys are impossible to convince. It's blatantly obvious. If I gave you the same photo twice you'd think it was different....hopeless! Time to wake up, kid.
its really good marketing. BMW runs out of ideas and arguably makes a mistake overstyling their cars (which runs counter to their previous design principle of minimal lines/timelessness). But by simply paying a few journalists and marketing the heck out of it as "X% better" , people eat it up.
and
I wonder if these fanboys also love Hyundais and Kias because we are now at that level of overstyling.
I agree with over styling I just don't believe they look like a Lexus on the tail lights.

Reminds me of euro BMW Blackline Taillights.

Really. Lexus IS was the worst car I ever test drove. A car that in Sport mode, pressing accelerator only increases the engine noise with no increased agility. Some people on this forum do make ridiculous claims

BMW as a company caters for everybody. If you want a hard core sedan, M3 is there for you. It seems some people want to enjoy M car characteristics without paying for it. I appreciate both the soft and hard BMW cars. My back says so

Let's be clear and 100% honest. Besides the person that posted the pics with all the BMW taillight design no one mentioned the origination of the "L bar" design.

I felt it became more prominent on the LCI E9x lights where the double bar design was used. It then matriculated to the E71/E70 LCI and the whole F chassis generation of cars.

(Look at the 6 series taillight design which inspired the new 8 series)

Now similar to the halos, it was slowly getting reduced. 3/4 circle, to half circle (roughly) and now quarter or 1/3 circle. My point is the design language went from double bar to single bar. Beginning with the 8 series or X2 depend on which was officially released or spied pics.

That's the new taillight design language as it appears. (G20)

I'll close it with this comment and question. Being that BMW started as a airplane company, don't the single bar design resemble the wings of a plane with a flared upward design at the end of the wing?

EDIT: Might as well add the G20's lights here for completeness

There are more examples out there, but I'll stop here.

L-shaped rear light clusters has been a BMW design characteristic since 1986 when the E32 was released. Lexus tries to incorporate the "L" in their badge in their rear lights, while BMW has used the theme in their cars, demonstrably, for quite a long time now.
if you can't tell the difference between L shaped housing versus RECTANGULAR shaped housing just because there is a lit up "L" in there, I don't know what to say.....

The last one is blatantly different

So what you're saying is that the problem ISN'T the L motif in the rear light cluster, it's the clusters themselves being rectangular? Who did BMW pilfer rectangular rear light clusters from I wonder? Pythagoras? Wait, must be Lexus too, surely.

I'm not saying they copied/bit/pilfered anyone. It's just reminiscent of Lexus rear ends.

I like BMWs too, and spent retarded money to mod mine, but I'm not going to deny that it reminds me of a Lexus. It is what it is.

Shit, now that I think about it, it looks more like the RX350 tail light

I do like that the housing is 3D though.

That's perfectly fine, I have absolutely no qualm if you find the design reminiscent of a Lexus or Audi or anything else. It's all subjective really, and like you stated, it is what it is.

My point is simply that the L motif is not something that is uniquely Lexus. If you ask me, BMW and Lexus have equal claim to the design feature, and it's unlikely that the theme will stop with either manufacturer.

For me it's the overall design, much less the "L"
housing shape, housing 3d element, housing shading, etc
For BMW it's definitely new. For Lexus, they have been doing this for years now. That's why it reminds me of it.

That's a fair point. The design as it stands is relatively new, as we've seen on the new 8 and X4.

As I've stated, if it reminds you of a Lexus design, it's no water off my back. I thought the E90 when it first debuted oddly resembled a Nissan Primera, heck I knew someone that thought the Porsche Carrera GT looked like an Alfa Romeo somehow. People will see things differently, and it's all equally parts frustrating and fascinating at the same time.

All things considered though, it is pretty cool that automotive design is something that still fascinates people as much as it evidently is.
