M340i Starting Issue

The last two days in a row I've had a couple issues starting the car in the morning.

Yesterday I pressed the start button and it started to turn over and just when it would normally start, it just stopped and the engine never turned on. It started normally after that.

Today it turned over for almost an entire second and then started. Normally the ignition is very quick (about half a second).

Nothing else feels out of the ordinary when driving.

Any ideas what might be going on? Or anyone run into this before?

I do have a Mission Performance tune and new spark plugs.

Ive experienced the same thing a few times. It's almost feels as if I didn't push the break pedal down far enough or didn't hold the button long enough, but I doubt thats the case. It starts just as normal afterwards, and I don't seem to notice any other issues.

Car is stock as well

Was there any resolution to this? I don't have any tunes, completely stock.

Last couple days during cold start the engine turned longer than normal before finally starting. After that initial cold start it was completely fine the rest of the day.

Weak battery? How much has your car done?

about 5,800 miles. Shouldn't be a weak battery as it seems to turn just fine... just takes a second or 2 to start up. Then throughout the rest of the day it's completely fine.

I'll be taking it in for an oil change soon so I'll have the dealer take a look. Just seems odd, almost like the starter is showing signs of wear.

5800 is extremely early for a weak battery. In my 330i, the car starts up as soon as I hit the start button. No delays (I'd have noticed a delay of a second or two). Let us know what the service centre says!

Yup, and only began happening these last couple days... so I'll keep an eye out.

No more than maybe a few days at a time. It definitely has gotten much less use than normal (5,800 miles in nearly a year vs. 10-12k/year in the before times).

You need to go for evening rides/ night runs etc. No need to quarantine the car when you're paying for it lol. BMW max cash reimbursement on unused miles is less than 400 bucks and not sure if that's only for those of us who paid for extra miles.

Oh trust me, the only reason I even have 5,800 miles is because of random drives/cruises. My commute has basically become dropping my daughter off at daycare a few miles away.

Any longer distance family drives are done in the X5 because my wife refuses to ride in the 3 series for longer than 15 minutes. She says it isn't any fun for the passenger

Ahh, I see didn't know that. Maybe you should have gotten her an X3M40 lol. I have been working from home since July and goes in the office one day a week at most. Currently over 12k and my one year ownership was in August.

Consequently I told the spouse to start using it for her daily commute. She has to go to the office daily and she was already running 1k miles above where she should be on her car. While she drives an RX350 she hasn't complained about my car lol. All she said is that it's fast. The X5 must be really comfortable I haven't been in one for years well this new gen you have. Then again I did see the interior of your X5, a car that stunning I can see why she doesn't care to ride in yours lol.

lol X3 M40i would have been nice... but she's all about comfort. The current G05 X5 is very nice... air suspension, soft merino leather with massage function, acoustic glass to keep the unpleasant noises of the world out... you feel as though angels are carrying you as you glide through the clouds. So I get the appeal for passengers - it's just not the most exciting car for people who like to drive.

Funny thing is my 2 year old actually asks to go faster ("fast fast!") and isn't satisfied with the X5, even though it's relatively quick in a straight line. Maybe an M50i is warranted - wonder if I can spin it as the "safer" option.

Did you ever find a resolution to this? My 2020 M340i with 24k miles just recently started having the same issue.

Your timing is impeccable

I hadn't run into this issue for a LONG time... and literally just yesterday I tried remote starting the car and it kept turning over without starting. I then canceled the remote start, then tried it again, and it started no problem. The problem didn't come back all day.

Super bizzare... but the issue doesn't seem to happen often at all (rarely in fact) and after the initial problem it completely goes away, so it would be hard for a dealer to replicate as well. The car drives totally fine and no error codes are thrown up.. so I'm not stressing too much on it.

Haha what are the chances… So when you originally ran into this issue it just resolved itself after some time?

It resolved itself immediately... I think over the 3 years I've owned this car it's only happened maybe 3 times
