Likely not true since we have had many folks jump major versions and they haven't OTAd every version. There are three major versions issued a year in March, July and November.

If you are not using CarPlay then you need to specifically connect to the vehicle's WiFi. CarPlay, and I think AA, use both connections so it will transfer during normal operation.

Strange timing for me, I got in my car today and it gave me the “remote upgrade available” message. 7/2022.58 worked like usual and now it’s updated.

At least I’ve done enough of these that I didn’t forget to recheck the remote start box in the menu. I always forget that.

Still won't update here, originally asked at a gas station and I said to do later. Now it's just stuck on preparing after several drives... even trickle charged battery and its stored in heated garage... hmm.

I had to take it to a dealer to get it updated. They reported that others are saving the same issue too. Shoddy by BMW

Mine was the same way. Charged the battery, tried to update multiple times, no result. Dealer just did it last week. There is a tsb out there that you can reference as well.
States for 2 series to change the battery but just use ista for the g series. It’s definitely battery related on g series, so maybe enough complaining, they’ll change out the battery.

My car is stuck on 2021/07 update… says there’s no upgrade available. Took to dealer and they said it’s not upgradable under warranty, I’d have to pay, because there’s a service bulletin stating if it doesn’t offer an upgrade and it’s already updated to 2021/07 then they won’t do anything. I’m upset because I wanted the 11/2022 or at least the 7/2022 for the lane departure updates.

It could be the way the drive is formatted. I had a similar issue updating maps from the usb drive. Format it on windows machine as fat32 and try again

They are so wrong. The SIB says if the vehicle is not being offered the current RSU version it should be updated by the dealer. Give them one more chance and then call BMWNA and let them know the situation.

Here's that same bulletin.. just updated. It states;

If I-Level is higher than S15A-21-07-500 / S18A-21-07-500, then customer complaint is not justified (no further Remote Software Upgrade are available for the vehicle) Attention: Warranty accounting is not permitted.

And of course, my I-Level is S18A-21-07-550, which is the 07/2021.50 update.

I have no idea why BMW would change that bulletin. What's the point of having/offering software upgrades that improve the car, yet here I am with year and a half old software.

Bmw needs to do so much better with their soft ware. Somehow they failed to transfer the minor update to many users and then published the major 07 update which the car refused to install as it expected the previous minor update in place. There are so many glitches in the software experience:
1. Out of no where we are suddenly prompted to enter our connected drive password. For cars with multiple driver profiles, it doesn’t state which driver profile needs the password. So we have to enter all driver profile credentials one by one till the error goes away.
2. People pay for usb map updates. The updates are so infrequent that it’s a rip off.
3. “Caring car “ features that blow cold air etc when you say you are tired are linked to a connected drive subscription. Why?
4. I have my doubts whether the drive recorder would automatically record an accident. Have had vandalism on my car, never got recorded.
5. Bmw Map update- could download via app, but then could not transfer to usb. The same stick was used previously without issues. Turns out a surface pro laptop isn’t supported.
6. Why can’t maps update automatically through ota?
7. Remote services- how often did remote 3d view actually work? Mostly server errors. This is a paid feature. They should provide refunds.
8. The my bmw assistant- not a patch on Google or Siri.

With such a shoddy experience, Bmw stop expect to be paid an annual subscription.

Yeah, I’m not sure why they can’t just push the updates out to the customer manually through connecteddrive. They told me to go to the dealer and then when I do they say there’s nothing they can do without charging me labor. *facepalm*

In my case they pushed the update out to me via the ota. Downloaded to phone. Transferred to car. But the car refused to install it. Very poor error handling “you will be notified when it is ready to be installed”. Turns out the car did not have have the 03/2022 update (why) and hence refused to install the 07/2022 update (why). The dealer manually updated the car to 11/2022. Said others have had the same issue. Just shoddy.

And that doesn't even make sense because I was told you're not supposed to get every update, you get it based off the last one you were on. So if you're on 7/2021 then you go to 7/2022, if you're on 3/2021, then you go to 3/2022 and so on.. so obviously their communication is terrible on this stuff lol, I should just complain to BMWNA

I have had my car for 4 years. In most cases I have received the 03 and 07 updates. So what they have told you is BS (unless Bmw recently changed it without due diligence). Finally, the 03 updates are minor. Features are pushed out in the 07 updates. So if true, they are essentially forcing customers on 03 updates to wait an additional 6 months.

Thanks for the update, I haven't seen that one before. It doesn't make sense since they have been pushing out new updates and folks are having problems getting them. I wonder if there is a new SIB to cover the latest.

As far as on the NHTSA website that is their latest SIB. I might try contacting BMW NA

Drive Recorder has no "park " mode.
It will only record an accident if the car is on at the time as far as I know.

It's not really a substitute for a dashcam. At best its a backup for whatever dashcam you use.
