URGENT Q: Can I Delay Car Pickup after Arrival at Dealership

Hi,

In anyone's experience (especially folks working at BMW), how long can I delay picking up my reserved car from the dealership?

Background: my insurance starts March 1 (after delaying it many times due to the car being delayed). And my insurance provider has told me that the insurance rates are much higher atm compared to when I got the quote. So if I pick up the car before March 1 and try to change the insurance start date, my premium could go up as much as $250 more per month.

The car should be arriving at the NY dock today so I assume it will be ready for pickup sometime next week. Is it too much to ask my dealer to hold off the pickup for about a week?

I don't want to lose the car over this but additional $250 a month is a lot.

Thanks everyone for their input

It's up to the dealer, but don't see why they would have an issue holding it for a week. Alternatively, you could just get insurance coverage from a different company first, and cancel the policy on March 1st.

I see you are in NY. Not sure where, but I can’t imagine this will be an issue. When they call, just schedule it for when works for you. That just happens to be March 1 or later. Tell them you are on vacation.

I would search for another insurance company. Why would the premium go up so much in the amount of $250 a month more?

So i got the quote back in November and evidently rates in NY for new insurers (did not have a car previously) are insanely high rn due to inflation related to mechanical work... I kept pushing the start date back and that's fine but if you want to move it sooner after, they have to re-run the quote

If you explain the situation to the dealership AND you actually pick up the car ON MARCH 1st they will more than likely be okay. You need to be very clear that they agree with you to wait, because there’s really nothing to prevent them from selling it out from under you. Is there any chance of signing the paperwork when the car arrives at the dealer and waiting until March 1st to pick it up?

They will want very badly to be absolutely sure they can get the sale on February’s business and transactions closed on the first day of the new month usually carry back to the previous day. That happens frequently happens when the 1st falls on a weekend. It’s a little unclear if that would be the case with a new month starting midweek.

Let me get this straight, the insurance company quoted you a rate in November, for a brand new car that you did not have in your possession and now they're telling you the rate will go up by $250 a month if you pickup the car earlier than March 1st?

just pickup the car and garage it until march 1st...seems like a sketchy company. Must be a NY thing....

Interesting point, I would be willing to sign the paperwork and go verify the car if necessary yep. I am waiting for them to reach out to when the car is ready to picked up so lets see what they say

whofelt I could definitely garage it but don't I need to provide insurance to pick it up?

Proof of insurance is for the lender or if you're leasing. If you're paying cash, the dealer probably couldn't care less if you have insurance or not.

So 250 a month more means your annual premium would jump around 3K. If this is accurate OP should probably start shopping for better rates. Ouch!

This is absolutely not true. You can’t register it without insurance. And car has to registered before it leaves the lot. All that is part of the pick up process.
Practically, you don’t want to own a car that isnt insured. If something happens to it, it comes out of your pocket.

Ahh right, didn't think about the state registration.

does your state allow you to waive liability on the new car, garage the new car until march 1st when your insurance goes in effect?

if you don't show proof of insurance, the loan agency can add their own car insurance of their choice and bill you. they will report that to the DMV.

It doesn’t work that way in NY.

Looks like my car is still at the Vehicle Processing Center since Friday. Acc to BMW, it will reach the Dealership on Feb 23. In this case, March 1 would be less than a week for pickup and that doesn't seems like a big ask?

My dealership will be holding my car for some period of time, up to 2 weeks for me. They know I’m out of country and it looks like the car will be delivered when I can’t come in to sign paperwork and pick it up.

My dealer was going to hold my car while I was traveling for work for a few weeks. It’s a customer-ordered car and I just happened to not be available when the car arrived.

They work around your life, not the other way around. This is especially true since BMW is a luxury brand and luxury brands theoretically should cater to your lifestyle.
