Attempted break in

So it looks like someone has tried to break into my house, the other night I heard the door handle going so I went down to investigate and saw a car drive off but just before someone shouted out 'sorry mate wrong house'. Now this has all been reported to the police and we have cctv but it doesn't show anything. Today I've gone back and it looks like someone has either been back to wedge the door open (frames bent and marked) or they did it on the night and I missed it.
My question is I have a upvc door but is there anything I can add to aid in security? We now have a fully working motion detected cctv which notifies us if it's triggered but I would like to add some physical barriers to stop/slow them down getting in.

One of these;

and one of these;

Seriously though, thank goodness I live in an area where there is zero crime (touch wood). I wouldn't like to live in an area where I had to turn my house in to a fortress.

I guess the only realistic answer apart from bars on all your windows is lots of signs advertising hi tech surveillance devices, cameras stuck all over the outside and high power motion spots on the drive etc.

Just looking at burglar alarms now, need a pet friendly one.

I'm more of a knife than gun man to be fair but a claymore sounds much better!

Good outside lighting activated by motion sensors. Something which will bathe the outside of your house in good enough light that your cctv system will be able to record them.
A good burglar alarm. Two identical houses next to each, one with an alarm and one without, who do you think will get targeted?
Cut back shrubbery/trees which might give burglars cover.
Best possible doors and windows you can afford. Make sure windows are locked and the keys aren't left in the locks.
Stickers in windows warning there is internal and external cctv and if they can read it they are being recorded.
Don't leave keys visible from outside.
And dogs are very good deterrents. Doesn't have to be a traditional guard breed, just anything that will bark when it hears something out the ordinary.

Maplin and the like do a good range of security type stuff including dummy cameras. I would assume deterrent is going to help too.

You could always rebadge your 335d to a 320. They'll think youre poor and move on.

Any recommendations for a good brand of alarm? I only really know Yale. The front of the house is on a main road and right by a street lamp so well lit usually. We have an outside light and no shrubbery etc to hide behind.
I must admit I'm shocked at how brazen this person must have been and just a bit of a shame I was half asleep when I went down so didnt to run out and get reg etc.

Haha can't beat a bit of lock stock!

the badge isn't a bad idea! My dad as friend had there van stolen as was told and old school steering lock is the best way to stop people now. Going to look into these too!

We have 2 cameras out the front, one high up and obvious on the front door and another hidden that's motion activated.

Put a sign up that reads "we shoot to kill in this household. The door is locked for your protection not ours"

Ideally look for a local installer who is approved, you can get pet specific PIR detectors so that's not a concern

An external box both has a local company name as well as moving LEDs etc so it looks like a good working system.

Speak to your local police station and ask for reccommendations then get the owner of the company round to talk you through the options

We had a system that alarmed all off the doors and downstairs PIRs when set at night but not the upstairs ones (landing) this way you can set it when you are in but not trigger it unless you go downstairs.

You can even have a setting that sets all of the door sensors but not the PIRs if you want security when you are still in the house.

Or have audible chirps when the doors are opened so you know when the doors open etc

Alarm keypad next to your bed so you can set it or press the panic facility if you are disturbed but don't want to go downstairs

Lots of options

Very good advice and pretty much what I did.

http://www.texe.com/uk/products/

The perimeter alarm is great, set all the doors/windows and walk around the house as normal. Also I have a remote that acts as part of the mesh network which can be used to arm, disarm and as a panic alarm..

Hey will try again, just keep a look out, when I had two cars stolen they came back 2 months later to try and take the replacements. A women not far from me had two range rovers stolen in 4 months the same way.

It will get to a point when you're better off letting them have the keys mate, protect the family.

Physical barriers and things that make noise are the best, parking posts, dogs, pregnant women.

I have motion based cctv that alarms us but tbh, just picks up a hoodie wearing a mask.

I had a Rockdoor Ultimate installed on my rental property, they are the best in the business and really impressive.

Not cheap but worth every penny.

Defiantly a dog mate, keeps all the scrotes away from my house. Have them walking past all the time "nice car mate" then they see the dog and their attitude changes always ask me "does he bite" obviously the answer is yes

[QUOTE=F15CCT;21253235]Just looking at burglar alarms now, need a pet friendly one.

I had one fitted a few months ago. The PIR's sense body mass and therefore won't be detected by our dog or cat. Meaning that we can just isolate the landing and wander about upstairs without a problem. We have a combination of shock detection, curtain PIR and Pet freindly PIRs.

It's good

I'd recommend a Texecom system too. How many sensors (doors, PIR, window shock, etc) you have is then down to you.

Spoke to someone about a full install but need to wait for our building works to be done for him to install etc. So in the mean time I'm going to get a Yale home smart kit and hook that up tomorrow so at least we have a tempest measure as building works have only just started so will be a while. Thanks for all the help lads.

Garage List
Suggest you go for a monitored system. Mine costs abou £22 pcm but the peace of mind is great. My mum triggered it whilst on holiday and police alerted and on scene within minutes - not a guaranteed response however a suitable deterrent.

Most scrotes will be able to differentiate between a Mickey Mouse system and a professionally fitted and monitored system.

As suggested above decent composite not pvc panel doors in which the panel can be easily knocked out. That and plenty of visible deterrent e.g. Lights and cameras. Have heard a sign saying " beware of the dog" can also be a deterrent especially when used alongside a motion detecting sounder.
