All electric BMW 3 Series (G20) spied for first time

All electric BMW 3 Series (G20) spied for first time

COMMENTS

Spied for the first time today was the full electric G20 3 Series prototype. Telltale signs include a vanity (nonfunctional) grille and skinny tires, as well as the legally required "Electric Test Vehicle" sticker. And while it shows an exhaust, they're reportedly fake and left on the vehicle to deceive.

We do not yet have numbers on the range for the electric 3 Series, but considering its competition range from 200-300 miles per charge, that's the likely range we'll see.

Our photographer also observed a Tesla 3 being used by the BMW test crew to evaluate.

For our other G20 3 Series spy photos and details, see https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1213988

Was really hoping it would exceed the Model 3's 310 mile range (w/upgraded battery pack). Guess I'll be waiting for the iNext or i4 or whatever it's going to be called. I want an all electric BMW that gets close to 400 miles of range. Maybe 2-3 years from now?

I am almost certain that this is NOT an full electric G20, but the PHEV version with movable but closed grille vents.

edit: Only thing that make me doubt is the "Electric Test Vehicle" sticker instead of "Hybrid Test Vehicle"

Interesting for sure. With Tesla gaining market share quickly I hope we see some rapid development from the German brands.

I think that's hybrid.

Why would it have exhaust pipes otherwise?

I have seen BMW test cars with the same plate "electric test vehicle" several times, more than a year ago.

This. If they made a full EV 3 series with fake tailpipes that would be beyond cheesy for BMW

At least it looks like a normal, good looking BMW unlike most of the electric alternatives out there. This segment will pick up steam when this practice of using current fleet models becomes more prevalent.

Funny to see what was considered to be the benchmark of sports sedans being benchmark against the new benchmark (Tesla 3). Way to go USA!

I really hope the electric one is out in a year so I can switch out of my diesel one. the stupid headlights-grilles tho... god damn, fire that designer.

That aside, bmw and others love this electric car stuff. Only because they can finally upsell us into a new class of vehicle and all of us who are hopping used car to used car are gonna be buying something electric at full price soon. this is exciting, so many cars to ditch and to buy. They all love this. Tesla - good job on getting us here.!

Could be that only the prototypes have exhaust pipes to trick people while it's testing.

And hybrid G20 prototypes have already been spotted. They have "Hybrid Test Vehicle" instead of "Electric Test Vehicle" stickers like on this latest prototype.

I don't see any low hanging mufflers so they must be fake.

God, its about time BMW produced a vehicle which has the range to compete with Tesla!

I have a Tesla-X (and also an i8), and with 200-300 range, I bet most folks would not need a range extender. I'ld certainly buy one without it... Much simpler car (inc maint) that way...

That's the funniest thing I've read all week. BMW will make this a mid $50k car because they can. When the Tesla Model 3 is going for $55k, there is no way BMW's ego will let them sell this for less.

On top of that, BMW has one of the highest margins in the industry. If they did all electric I bet it’d be $70k. Look at the numbers Tesla needs to make it profitable.

Per below, I don’t think BMW does loss leaders...

Considering a base 340i goes for about 50k, they should be able to put out an all electric car at that price point. Add in profit-making options that most of us buy- it should easily make money. The base model might be a loss leader, but it should be viable.

At the same price point, the Electric X3 would be the more popular choice, IMHO.

That might be true, but if BMW really wants to take over the entry lvl luxury compact EV segment like it did for the gas market with the 3 series, it needs a very compelling and well rounded product. A slightly lower price compared to the current segment leader doesn't hurt.

I'm really looking forward to the new 3 series EV or i4 or iNext, i hope they can make a more superior product than the Model 3 on range, power, charging and autonomy. if they do i'll definitely switch, only reason i bought model 3 is because there's no closer competitor within the next 2 years at least...

Well, Tesla is cheaper and have less quality to it than similar BMW. Or any premium German carmanufactor. It's the tech and range, and obviously the charging that is Tesla's mojo. The price for a EV 3 series...? Intresting, i believe several insiders said the 120Ah i3 was the EV 3 series. I'm not sure what i see here? Range extender is yesterday tech.
