Getting old!!

Looking at the alternative I suppose I should be grateful I’m getting older - but the mind don’t keep up and accept.

So let’s all post on here issues we’re having as time passes by

Get the ball rolling

I find aches and knocks take much longer to heal and go away. Currently I’ve got tendon issues in my elbow. Partly down to me (still) doing contact sports.

On a positive I’m not incontinent and can still get wood.

Edit- my hairline also seems to have stopped receeding as well.

List away folks.

Sleep. Unless I get absolutely shit-faced on booze I can't sleep through the night, or past 7 in the morning. Seems like only yesterday I could sleep from midnight until 11am the next morning.

I’m actually much fitter, healthier and stronger than I was in my 20’s! All I did back then is smoke, booze and eat junk food!

Working out and revolutionising my diet has changed my life around big time!

Was starting to get to be a 'grumpy old man' until mid 2017 when I was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent six weeks of radio/chemo therapy
- am well on the mend now and outlook to life has changed - am doing all the things that wife and I talked about, and never got round to doing and it's my 70th birthday, tomorrow ! So won't say that I don't have a moan, now and then, but you only get one go at life - so make the most of it!

Did a lot of weights from 18 onwards pretty consistent with those. But only started cardio when I hit 40, that was after going out for a run with the other half. And struggling to keep up with her

Glad you’re both on the mend.

It’s a shame that it takes something like that to reappraise our priorities ( talking about myself here) , keep meaning to reduce hrs etc and do those things I’ve always wanted to or at least readjust work:life balance and keep failing.

Not really that old compared to some of the dinosaurs on here (I'm 49), but yes, I normally ache too. I run half marathons for a hobby, so I find myself doing long runs every week, which it takes a couple of days to recover from.
(Not) looking forward to tomorrow's 11 miler ...

Apart from that, the only thing that irks me about getting old is that this year I actually had to start wearing reading glasses.

Remember, getting old is horrible. Until you consider the alternative ...

Same here. Lost 3 stone after I took up cycling and have kept it off. Now weigh the same as I did when I was 20 and am fitter at 56 than I was at 36. I exercise at least 5 days a week, mixing weights with cardio, do a bit of hillwalking and cycling. I have a resting heart rate of 44, in spite of enjoying more than a couple of shandies of a weekend. I’m not anal about diet and have a sweet tooth but hopefully I’m balancing it all out.

Have to say I do notice sprains & pains take longer to resolve, and after years of martial arts some of my joints are starting to show signs of wear and tear. I’ve had decompression ops on both shoulders, meniscus tear repaired on one knee, and broken elbows & collarbones from bike spills. I suspect these will get worse with age, and arthritis will eventually set in.

I think much of it is down to the genetic lottery - my old man is 84 and fit as a fiddle, as is my mum. My mother in law by contrast is a bit of a poor soul with dementia, and no matter how fit and creak free I am physically, that’s the one thing I fear as I get older.

I need to live life to the max and get an M4 next.....

I'm only 43 but I really notice how much harder it is to stay fit compared to my younger years or even just 5 years ago.

And recovery takes twice as long too.

And my memory is crap these days too. Not sure if that's age or modern technology that's causing that though.

Otherwise I think I'm doing alright... all my own hair, hair colour, teeth, and no reading glasses required yet.

What was the question again...?

Plus points - I am alive, reasonably healthy, pretty happy, and can at least look forward to retirement - with part of it funded by a final salary pension...

Cons - if I live like I used to they tell me I am overweight, don’t get enough exercise, drink too much, eat the wrong stuff and my cholesterol. Is too high (yep it was the company medical this week). Memory not as good, wear Varifocals, have very little hair and what I have got is greying....

Biggest plus - saw my daughter get married, my son finish his masters, and can watch my grandson grow every day. None of which my wife saw so the other issues don’t matter a jot.

Life is for enjoying, moan a bit when you need to but keep it in perspective!

Imho cardio is probably more important as we age. Yes hate legs day aswell. But I do tend to them after a 30min hiit session on the treadmill.

Needed glasses at 48, went grey.. but most importantly I finally got round to going to the doctor because I was getting up to pee more often, flow rate wasn't the same and always got back ache. He sent me for an ultra sound and they found a tumour on my left kidney.. It came out on the 12th and so far I'm recovering OK.
Apparently if prostate and kidney cancer are found early and haven't spread the outlook is good.
My message is, if you are a middle age man get yourself checked, the ladies get breast checks and smears but they leave it up to us to sort ourselves out :-)
( I'm a reasonably fit 60yr old non smoker and light drinker ! )

Issues -

1. Grumpier
2. Joints hurt and minor niggles take ages to heal
3. Fed up of cameras being fed up my arse, down my throat and into my jap's eye and all the way to my bladder

I think 1 might be directly related to 2 and 3.
