Video: M340i review and F80 M3 comparison by Evolve

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW Park Lane gave us a new G20 M340i to test drive. We also take a look around at the styling of the new 3 Series, and then a closer look at all the tech that the latest BMW iDrive has added.

Driving Impressions and comparison to F80 M3.

Walk around and tech.

x-Drive vs RWD... pretty much came out as expected. Drag races are relatively dull. I want to see lap times.

I don't have anything from a dig, but from a roll I pulled away without issue.

Cold temps (6 Celsius), F80 stock tune with only a catback exhaust.

I'd also enjoy seeing an actual head to head matchup of the M340i and M3! How do they perform comparatively from a dig from a roll on the track etc.

It's a somewhat apples to oranges comparison but given the relative price point of used F80 M3's and the new M340i, think it's likely that some people could be potentially Cross shopping the two.

The outgoing M car is going to be more raw and focused on performance but the new M340i has the newest styling and technology which appeals to some buyers. I have looked at the two cars and test driven both and I can see pros/cons to each... I think a true enthusiast would still want a lightly used M3...But seen a real world performance comparison would be really interesting

This analysis is spot on.

I've seen a good amount of M340i's around now and I think they look great.

Styling-wise I still think the M3/4 stands out quite a bit more (the M340i is still the standard 3 series chassis, even if it has some extra flare with some M bits). I'd actually really like to test drive one though!

Really excited to see the styling and performance of the G80 M3/4 (massive grill and all!)

Totally agree with that.

I have driven an M340i and my wife owns an F80 M3 comp. They are really apples and oranges. The 340 is a fast daily, whilst the M3 drives like an enthusiast's car and would be sweeter on track.

The obsession with 0-60 or 62, relates only to traction and not real world driving performance, but it can't be denied that the 340 performance is very accessible, regardless of road conditions.

I test drove the M340i, coming from F80 and ended up buying an M2C (similar price point). I realize that for those that want a four door this doesn't matter. I like the power and tech of the M340 but the driving experience was 'blah'. Knew I would've become bored with it almost immediately.

The M340i is a sporty commuter car, not a trackable street car like the M models.

Interesting read here. I always find it humorous to see how people react after new generation non-M car can keep up with the previous gen M on the track.

I have had three straight M3's. Great cars, but in all those years I never once took it to the track.

Took some nice road trips. Lots of runs to the office. To the middle school and high school more times than we can possibly count. Stop and shop, Whole Foods, and many many restaurants.

Speed is great, but the allure of the M car, for me anyways, has always been the wonderfully balanced and unflappable chassis. A word of caution. Driving a true M car for any length of time ruins you. Every other car you get into feels sloppy and floaty. I know BMW had gone soft in recent years, but even the m550 feels like a Buick.

I took the M340 home for a 3 day weekend long test drive. I wanted to be sure. It is a beautiful car. In many ways, BETTER than the current M3. I feel I can say that having owned two over 5 years and having driven a combined 75,000 miles in them.

M cars can be high strung. Hyper. It is fun to drive like a hooligan, but it can be embarrassing when your car shows up popping, cracking and farting (cold starts in the M3 competition are LOUD) to that nice restaurant valet on a Saturday night.

After I put some miles on the M340 I plan on writing a nice seat of the pants review. I have already decided to be brutally honest with my assessment.

My last two M cars were white/black.

My M340 is Tanzanite/cognac. Daring.

Wish that damn boat went faster.

Tanzanite over cognac is fantastic, you'll love it. My previous F80 was tanzanite over gold brown and the combo never got old.
