Can I use an SSD instead of a USB stick?
Hi.
I love love the speeds of SSD compared to USB. Can I use a DIY-converted SSD to USB 3.1 in my G20 to play music/videos and update the navigation software? I want to leave it connected to the USB port in the armrest. Has anyone done this or at least know whether it is advisable/possible to do so? Thanks in advance. |

https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1598337 Some people have reported that earlier versions of iDrive 7 wouldn't support SSDs, only USB sticks (forced by BMW). But later others reported differently and that they found SSDs that would work. In theory it should be possible to my view. Cannot hurt to try. I don't know what storage capacity you look for, but you have very small USB sticks with 64 or 128GB storage and even more. And these are fast enough. Note: A super fast SSD doesn't mean updating or loading is much faster as it depends all the other components speed (data throughput, CPU, etc.).

If you just plug in a SSD into one of the USB sockets (USB A or C doesn't matter), it is similar to using any USB stick. I had in the past USB sticks that were not recognized by my F30 and E85 and it never lead to any issues - they simply were no seen by the cars. So basically the device works or it doesn't. Hence, if the SSD works (read: is recognized), you should be able to export / import / play everything you also can do with USB sticks on the respective USB ports. Of course, keep in mind any device for starters needs to be formatted correctly (FAT32 or exFAT is recommended by BMW)! N.b. It will be different if you would try to build a SSD in the car replacing the standard build in disk. From what I have read I understand that this is impossible to do. As far as I know, this is the reason you not will find f.i. 3rd party solutions to replace the build in disk.
