The new "Hey BMW" will blow your mind!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I just got a preview of the new "Hey BMW" Intelligent personal assistant. The update will show up first in the 4 series and LCI 5 series and will be able to do things like open the windows and change the driving modes.

I am hoping this is something that can be retrofitted to the 2020 models via future software updates.

Can't wait to try it out for myself. I sure hope that you're right and maybe it's available via an update!

I just don’t get this sort of feature in a car. Same with gesture control.

Literally you have to press one easy to use button and the window goes down. Not only that, I can’t see “hey Bmw” dropping the window 3 inches.

Just more pointless tech to distract us from the diluted driving experience and muted sounds of modern cars.

I actually thought the same thing about gesture control, but I use it all the time to change the volume or go to the next song while playing music over Bluetooth.

Yeah the gesture control... i have to say I originally thought was a totally useless gimmick and a complete joke.

Now I shamefully find myself using it on a daily basis.....

What are the most common things you use the gesture control for?

So far we have :
  • volume control
  • skip song
  • Navigating to a preset destination (like home)
  • Mute/Unmute
  • Text notifications (or any notifications I might get)

Same boat. I thought it would be something cute to show a passenger but I’d never actually use it but when drivinG it’s really natural to twirl up or down... I really don’t think about it. For whatever reason it’s never been as natural for me on the steering wheel, I still reached for the knob but have noticed I don’t now.

When you say text notifications, are you having it read them off to you or just tell you who it's from and whatnot? Also are you using it for voice-to-text to reply?

It reads them off to me (that's the only option while driving), or if I'm stopped it'll display the entire text on the screen.

I actually haven't tried replying using voice-to-text, and I don't really use it in any capacity (even just over my phone while not driving)... for some reason I have issues talking in text and always screw up my response... if that makes sense.... So I always just prefer to type my responses when I get a chance.

I’m in the gesture control is useless camp.
Same as the hands free boot opening..... standing there waving your foot under the rear bumper like some kind of idiot singing the Hokie Kokie song to themselves

It might be a bit pointless for things that there are buttons for (but then, maybe you want to keep your hands on the steering wheel while telling your BMW to close the windows when shit gets real), but it's going to be useful for things for which there are no buttons ("Hey BMW, turn off the AC") or in the brave new world with almost no buttons at all (new I4 and others maybe).

100%. Mine is so terrible I never even used it. Not. Even. Close. The sad thing is, the 5 year older POS ford it replaced had one of the best voice command systems I had ever used. I bet it was 98% right. I loved it when I song popped in my head - hit the steering wheel button and "Play XXX" and away it would go almost instantly.

I can use my BMW for initiating a call and it will be right 70% of the time, but most people I call are saved in my HUD so I just use that 99% of the time.

Good thing this car drives so good or I would be disappointed enough by the tech and systems to not want another one. It DOES excel at being a SUV that drives like a car though - which is exactly why I bought it.

I use the assistant and gesture control every time I drive pretty much. Never thought I would care to use it (heck I don't use Siri on my iPhone) but it's so much easier to do a few commonly used task (turn AC on/off, gesture control to mute, and volume control up and down, etc).

Be better if there were in cabin odor sensors that detected farts and opened the windows automatically

What the hell is going on?

Holy crap! How is this useful?!? It's a press of a button.

Seriously BMW get your s**t together!

Next brilliant idea remove all buttons from cabin.

If only they would put this energy on things that mattered.... sigh...

Same here, I thought it would be a gimmick but muting and using the palm - fist - palm to set the nav to home address is very quick and easy to do without taking your eyes off the road.

I've only had the 3 a few days so haven't used the voice commands that much yet but I expect setting adhoc destinations will be the most common use.

Agree about opening the windows! Sunroof could be useful if it doesn't do it already as the button is a bit small.
