I ordered the OEM roof rack from GetBMWParts.com which is for the most part is good. However, the installation tool failed (rounded off) after two installations (see attached picture). I am now using my own Allen tool, but I run the risk of over torquing or under torquing during installation. This dealer tried to have BMW provide a replacement but told them that is not possible and requires me to order a new kit. If you are in the fence with the OEM kit and Thule, I would recommend a Thule.

My installation tool from my 14 year old E90 roof rack is still good. So I'm not sure why BMW's vendor for this kit did not have the same quality.

I wanted to make sure everyone is aware. I am sending my information to BMWNA.

Cheers!

Same thing happened to me after 2 times... the service manager at the dealership chopped the rounded tip off of my tool so that i can use it again, but i suspect it will happen again once i continue to use it :

That's what I was thinking but I'm sure the same issue will occur. The whole thing can be disassembled. I'm going to see if I can modify an Allen tool and replace the deficient piece.

Is there a built-in clutch on the handle? Why would you risk over/under torquing if you used your own allen wrench?

That looks like fairly cheap tool steel. Probably made in China using cheap steel.

The handle does have a built-in break-away torque. The torque is substantial when trying tighten with a palm sized handle, which most likely the culprit of the Allen failure. For perspective, the installation torque from my old car to this car is much higher(based on required break-away torque)

The possibility of under-torquing is much more prevalent than over-torquing. However, based on the fine threads, there is a risk of damaging the fastener or insert if using a long handle Allen wrench and untrained operator.
Cheers!

I had the OEM version for my F35 and it's still in good shape after a couple of installation, this cross bar is made by Thule and pretty sure you can order it from a local rack store or BMW shop.

I received an email from BMWNA.
GetBMWParts.com is not an authorized BMW dealer and I was directed to contact my local dealer for assistance. BMWNA can not assist me directly.

Getbmwparts is under Silver Spring BMW wing and they are legit place to obtain genuine BMW parts.
