New BMW Anti Tuning Software

Hey everyone, does the new anti tuning software that BMW released affect N55's? I've had my car in and out of the dealer a lot this year and just learned about this software update. Is there any way to figure out if my car has it? I'm coming up on a year of ownership, so I'm kind of thinking it might have had the update done when I purchased the car in Feb. of 2020.

It's very likely that any car still covered by warranty would be included in the deployment of this firmware update. There isn't anything one can do once the firmware had been updated.

I have to now send the DME version I have to ProTuning Freaks for them to verify if I can even tune now.

Wow this is crazy. How would we know if our DME had this update? Is there any way to reverse it like physically unlocking the DME? If you're already tuned does this update reverse the tune?

Sorry for all the questions but my car is still under factory warranty so holding off for now but wanting to tune it next year when the warranty runs out. Thanks for any info!

It effects all BMW, they won't flash your car unless there's a problem with a module or something and reflashing it fixes it, and under warranty. Should be on your invoice if they did flash it when you took it to the dealer. Otherwise you can look up your I-step version with Esys or something similar

My car has been to the dealer within the last few weeks and I've had no issues reflashing DME even though they updated everything and wiped all my coding...

Right on good to hear. It sounds like if you're already tuned you're safe, but you would think they would wipe the DME and flash the updated version regardless. I've read in a few threads that BMW's new version of their troubleshooting software (can't think of the name) now auto-detects (and flags) tuned cars simply by plugging it in (they no longer have to specifically look for a tune). Have you had any issues or have they said anything to you about your tune?

Your experience may vary, some have had their cars updated during routine maintenance like an oil change. Some dealers will do it as a courtesy if your i-step is old. One thing to note, recent updates make the exhaust quieter, at least on the 40i, and will prevent some things from being coded, like changing one touch lane change turn signal blinks from the default three blinks.

I tell them don't update the dme. Then something breaks like steering rack. They flash it. Game over

Essentially what happens is when a code or tune is detected it only suggests to them to look into them. If the SA or tech wants to, they'll flag your car. It's their choice to flag the car or not. The new troubleshooting software simply makes it easier for them to detect tampering with the DME, does it mean it'll flag it automatically? no, the advisor or tech must manually do that.
This is far as I understand it.

I wouldn't be surprised if I have it. I bought the car CPO in Feb. of this year. I also, had to have the transmission software updated which could have updated the whole car. I also have my wastegate replaced, so that could have did something too. I'll let you guys know what ProTuning Freaks say. I should have my car back today or tomorrow from the body shop, so I should be able to grab the information they need to make a determination on what I have.

The dealers who offer tuning services like Dinan can't be happy with this. Their service departments will lose business.

I'm planning on getting the Shockware mod this winter. I just hope my CPO vehicle hasn't been flashed without me knowing it.

I had to send my ECU off to be bench tuned.. portable tuner couldn't talk to it, said ECU was in "recovery mode" (probably a generic error).

Is that this, or something else?

That's something else. Sounds like it had an error.

You must have had a veeeeery old software version. Coding of the one-touch turn signal blinks has not been available since LCI.
If your exhaust is quieter, you might want to ask them to update again next time. At least for MPPSK, this was only temporarily the case and fixed in the later SW releases.

My i-step was old (2016) before they messed with it and I have an LCI, but i was still able to code 5 blinks on the one touch. So even early LCI models had some leeway..

Potentially on the 3-Series. Not on the 4, where the LCI was introduced in 2017. Never been a coding option there (on LCI).

My car had to get fully updated due to shaking on startup (this didn't fix it)
but I was just fine after and this was only 2 months ago tops.
