Roof rack & hitch survey
Anyone get an email asking them to fill out a survey about how they like the look and functionality of the roof rack and trailer hitch on the X3?

Wonder what it means for the next gen of X3s? Seems like they maybe looking to ditch these two items if they are now asking how much use they get and if people like the looks of them.

Received the email this weekend for the survey. Interesting where they may go with the roof rail design if the imbed it into the body work vs bolt on. May help with aerodynamics drag reduction and increase fuel efficiency.

The roof rack is a cost reduction opportunity for carmakers. Trailer hitches are a low take rate option. Both are important features to me, I use them both multiple times per year.
It’s weird. The MB GLE has standard roof rails and seemingly high take rate on the hitch. The Porsche Cayenne does not have standard roof rails and has a low take rate hitch. The G01 X3 has standard roof rails and a very low take rate hitch. The X5 I think has standard roof rails and what seems to me to be a very low hitch take rate. The Toyota 4Runner has standard roof rails and I think the hitch is standard. It’s all over the map between manufacturers and models. I’m shopping now for my next preowned vehicle in a few years and the dearth of hitches is concerning to me. I haven’t received a survey yet. |

I have not received the survey, and do have the trailer hitch.
I would not have purchased my X3 if a hitch was not available. Maybe BMW already knows that, and don’t want to hear it? |

Same here. No survey sent to me. Roof rails I don't care about. But if there was not a hitch, I would have skipped the X3.

Unfortunately, in the US we can't even spec without the rails, and while other regions can, they are then left with a drab gray plastic roof trim strip unlike any other model lines they produce now which offer paint-matched roof trim pieces (except for also the G05 and F95 series). Not something to be desired in this price-point vehicle as it cheapens the look IMHO. For those interested, I've got a 'Roof Rail Deletion thread' over on the F97/98 sub-Forum, and am being 'dehorned' tomorrow with a paint and body shop paint-matching the OEM roof trim strips that we ordered from Germany. https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1784073 Any chance some of you still have the email and/or screen captures of the questions they asked (specifically referencing the rails and not the hitch)? Much appreciated if available and can be shared here. |
