HUD - worth it?
Basically the title, curious to hear from folks who have HUD if it's worth having it or not?
I don't have exec package on my build because I don't care much for heated seats and steering wheel, so looking at $1200 difference to add exec just to get HUD |

This my first car with it and yes I think it is worth it. Really no need to look down at the dash, speed limits, visual tach, route directions, info on phone calls etc.
If I didn't get it would I enjoy the car less, no. Doubt it is worth the $1,200 if you don't want/need the heated seats/wheel.

I'd say its one of those things that if you never have it, you'll be totally fine. But once you get it, you don't want to give it up.

Does it show the navigation info from Google maps on carplay? Like which lanes are right lanes, distance to the turn etc.
Since I'm leasing I'm looking at $13 per month increase if I add the $1200 extra needed for exec. |

I'm going to be a bit of a contrarian here. If most of your driving is done during daylight hours, and you wear polarized sunglasses, you might has well save your money as the visibility of the display is pretty poor.
Aside from that issue, it's probably worth having although I don't think it's important as BSW and some of the other safety systems. |

In the G01, I think gesture control with ID7 is troublesome and a gimmick, the intelligent assistant is rarely helpful because 90% of the things she can do in other models are not available due to outdated hardware controllers and BMW have cheapened the HK system with a sub standard 600w amplifier which struggles to manage the bass speakers. To compensate, the HUD works well, just a crying shame they removed Speed Limit Info as a standard feature which is a pure revenue grab as no weight or hardware are saved by blocking SLI (luckily it can be enabled through coding but requires a genuine fsc code). If you have iD7, there's a HUD option for a rev bar. I think it's called Sport Display.

I've have HUD since BMW first introduced it in the 2004 5er. It was a late intro option and I waited to order the car until it was available. I thought it would be a cool novelty. Within minutes of having it, I realized it was an incredibly valuable safety feature. As others have said, you don't miss it if you've never had it. But once you have it, you'll understand what we're all talking about.

I love mine. Not my first car with one, but it's the biggest and most colorful for sure. When you use the BMW nav it's amazing how large it'll show a map with upcoming turns/lanes etc. I also have it set to show the media options in the HUD vs the instrument cluster so I don't look down very often for regular use items.
Like above, totally your call on the value, but it's a very nice feature. |

I find the HUD very useful. The less you need to take your eyes off of the road, the safer. As noted, polarized sun glasses do reduce the visibility, but varies based on the type. Maui Jims work OK.
If you have NAV running, it will show your turn lanes per your question.

Just to offer another perspective, I have HUD and often don’t notice it. I typically drive with my cruise control engaged, negating the need to use it for current speed, and I rarely use navigation, as I usually know where I’m going. I don’t mind having it, but I wouldn’t really miss it much if it was missing.

The rev bar shows automatically in Sport mode and there is an option iDrive to show it all the time which is what I have it set to. Having said that the options are different in the UK and the poster mentioning this may not have the proper option to display the rev bar.

The U.K. has the option for the rev counter.
We’re all different...I like the HUD but even after 14 months I often still look at the dash for speed. Nav is great with HUD as are driver assist graphics. I tend to look at speed in the HUD more in roadworks with speed restrictions though I often use the speed limiter in though situations so I don’t then need the HUD. Would I pay $1,200 for it? On a car I’ll keep 5 to 7 years..yes. 3 years? Maybe not....but YOLO.

Some of my cars have it, some don't. IMO it's not a dealbreaker. Good to have but not a requirement.

My feeling is that it is a must have going forward. Both our vehicles have them. I have Transitions glasses and they are not polarized. Work perfectly. I also have some optical quality clip on sunglasses that are not polarized and they work perfectly too.
There is important data presented on the HUD that cannot be underestimated. |
