Battery charger for 2021 X3 M40i

I use a CTEK Multi US 7002 charger for my 2011 335d. It sits in the garage a lot. Just a few minutes ago I felt the temperature on the 335d unit and it is cool (but working fine).

I have two of the 7002 chargers, and so I have hooked up the other one to my 2021 X3 M40i. I have noticed two things: the charger unit is running a bit warm and the charger doesn't seem to want to reach steady state (green LED).

Something is obviously amiss, but not sure what other than the 7002 is not up to the task.

Any of you USA-based people have a recommendation for a good charger for the X3, CTEK or otherwise. Supposedly it is an 80aH battery, but am not sure about that.

I've had this issue as well for both my 7002 and 4.3 Ctek chargers. I just unplug the charger and cables. Then reconnect and restart. I had no issues after doing this. I think the chargers need to reset/reboot the circuitry. Try and see if that works before replacing the unit.

Now that I have reread how the 7002 works, I can see how it would hover on light #2 for an extended period of time before it moves on to lights #3 and #4. It just surprises me since this is a week old car.

I did try the unplug charger and cables trick you mentioned. So far it hasn't seemed to make any difference. But I am patient and the unit isn't horribly hot.

Update #1: OK, patience paid off. It has now moved off light #2 (where the voltage applied his highest) to light #3 and the unit has cooled down a bit. I bet before bedtime tonight it will be into the green mode.

Do you have the charger set to AGM (the snowflake)? Also, it is possible even though your car is new, the battery may never have had a full charge. This is especially true if you have only done short trips in it since bringing it home.

No I do not have it set to Snowflake. None of the literature indicated it was the AGM setting. And yes, it has been short trips and all else doing settings in the garage.

If the weather would let up a bit I would like to take it for a longer drive. Right now I'm treating it with kid gloves.

Some of you may be interested in seeing the California regulation insert in my manual. I bought my first device in Maryland and the second in California. I never noticed the California insert before today, nor the table shown AGM for snowflake. So thanks for that.

But in my defense, I didn't even realize the battery was AGM. Where on the car (short of unpacking it in the back) or in any documentation does it give the tech specs for the battery? I looked.

I checked the forum stickie Technical Information Documentation > Voltage Supply and Bus Systems and in the battery section specifies the agm battery. Hope this helps.

Interesting. This is the only document that I somehow had not downloaded. I seem to be losing my attention to detail. Thanks.

BMW have been using AGM batteries since 2002. If I recall correctly, all models for something like 15 years.

....Original battery in my 2012 X3 was traditional lead acid.

Am pretty sure my 2011 335d battery is lead acid too.

With the introduction of engine start/stop technology, AGM batteries have become the norm

Many of the models had AGM when the early 'Efficient Dynamics' features started to be added. Even without those features, my 2006 E91 had an AGM battery.

I guess some of the introduction was market specific, the E83 model X3's had AGM in the UK. Even some E46 3-series had AGM.

Just one at a time. The white one was my K1100RS. Now I have a blue R1200RT. Attachment 2517088

I get a new one every three to four years or so. I'm due this Summer.

You're making me kinda miss my old '73 R75/5. Somewhere in Austria in 1974 or 1975.
