2021 M40i Tuning options

I've read some old posts about the 21 MY not being able to tune. Surely that's not right? is it? I'm about to pull the trigger on an X3 M40i, and I was really looking forward to unleashing some extra hp at some point. Are there any options while in warranty? Thanks in advance.

Tuners can't bench unlock 2021 DME yet.

So, it's not that they can't, just that they can't right now...correct? While I am pleased with the current level of performance, I was hoping to add more in the future, and would be good to know now if I'm better off looking for a used 2020 that I can have tuned. Thanks so much for the info. New to tuning with BMW.

There's new hardware protection that's yet to be cracked.

That's not to say it won't be cracked, but it's a piece of string. Might be next week, next year or never !

It will definitely be cracked to be able to be tuned. It going to take a while that's all. As it did about 6+ months of trial and error on my 2020.

I figured as much. Will the tunes void warranty? I've read a lot of opinions but have not seen anything solid.

Every tune voids warranty.

The did in the F series days! A lot of people got them for their 3 series's, didn't add a massive amount, but fully warranted which a lot of people like

eg:
F30 340i (b58)
Power: 326 HP -> 360 HP
Torque: 450 Nm -> 500 Nm

Numbers that now i see them again, look an awful lot like the standard tuning numbers for the G series based B58 cars.....

You could just buy mine! Its a 2019 with 15k miles. Had a performance tune installed by Carbahn auto by Steve Dinan in San Jose CA. Very fast. Sitting at 441 flywheel HP. The listing and pics are in the classifieds.

No way, just another way for them to monetize/nickel and dime. It's like subscription heated seats, fuck that. They would have an incentive to neuter powertrains for the base offerings, then charge extra to bring up to BMW spec. Imagine if your X3 M40i came with 320 HP, but you could buy a BMW tune for $3,000 that would bring it up to 382 HP. Or maybe it was a $20 a month subscription for the "full" power. *shudders in disgust*

Any updates if any tuners were able to unlock the DME for 2021 models?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a JB4 until the tunes are ready. I still have a ways to go before my first oil change, hell, I'm still in break in period; BUT my wife has a 430i that it's supposed to work on, so I might put it on her car first, and then move it to mine and try it out once I've put some miles on it. I'm still in the air on whether or not to get a catted or non catted and just change it out when I need to get it inspected.

I'm leaning towards a catted because of the throatier tone. Also I'm not sure if I could live with the smell tbh lol. Jb4 would be a nice upgrade but I don't think it has the capability to adjust burbles unlike a flash tune, if I'm right

I think you're right with the burbles, but to my knowledge, the 21s have not been been broken to tune yet.

Just be aware, you will get a CEL with a Catted downpipe as well.

Soooo, is there an option aside from ride around with the CEL and putting the OEM one back on when getting it inspected?

What you can do is some research on downpipes least likely to throw a CEL and install an O2 sensor spacer on top of that. From there you can install a JB4 which will give you a 75% of what a flash tune will and with it you can manually clear the CEL from the downpipe if it happens to pop up.
