Latest BMW i4 Prototype Drops Significant Camo

The latest sighted BMW i4 prototype has dropped a significant amount of camouflage.

Latest BMW i4 Prototype Drops Significant Camo

The latest on the i4 per ynguldyn in the Future BMW Model Info thread:

Start of Production:

November 2021 -- G26 i440, i4 M50 xDrive
  • The i4 will start production in November 2021. Right now I can see only the RWD i440 (my initial guess of AWD for this model was incorrect) and the i4 M50 xDrive.
  • The i440 seems to be pretty pedestrian: you will be able to configure it like a stripped down 420i or something like that, even 17" wheels (though maybe US will have 18" standard).
  • The M50 looks like a proper M Performance model, with M bodywork, bigger brakes, adaptive suspension, rear spoiler, 18"-20" wheels, etc. i440 can be equipped with the same as an option.
  • Basically, the main difference between the two models is the lack or presence of the front motor. In what is likely the biggest disappointment for this item, I can't get power numbers or battery capacities for these models.

I can't say it looks exciting, like, at all. I suppose these cars are made for basic transportation (for the affluent), but man they just look so boring.

Looks like a full-on new style big grill instead of the kidneys??? Hopefully I'm seeing it wrong.

After seeing the E Tron GT reveal yesterday, this looks underwhelming.

But no one knows what this will start at. The higher capacity battery and dual motor will likely start at 60-80, who knows

Isn't the i4 supposed to be a step down from the etron gt? More the size of a 4 series gran coupe rather than an A7 sized vehicle?

Am I the only one who have bigger problem with side profile and rear end than with the grill?! This rear windows growing line bothers me the most. As a result we have giant hip and even 19" wheel looks to small.

Who knows? BMW hasn't released pricing, rumor is that the iX will start over $100,000, this will probably top out near there, guessing the M50i model starts near $80,000.

I'm seeing a toned down version of what's on the current 4er.

That would kinda be nice! Though I'm not a buyer yet, just a yapper. 😁

Audis e-tron is 68ah, at a base of $66k and I’d guess similar in size/class. That’s probably the benchmark for BMW.
And Audi only sold 5,900 of them last year...

I was not even aware of the non-GT etron that they have been selling. Yes it seems more inline with the i4, fair point. Low sales but honestly I doubt bmw sells the i4 in high volume either

The current (2021) 4 has the new big awful grill. It's clear this does too.

If priced right, the i4 has a real opportunity to capture some buyers. No one has yet to release a premium EV sedan that doesn't encroach a starting price tag of $100,000. Even if this has a small premium over the 4 Seres Gran Coupé, it will still attract buyers that are looking for a 4 Series.

The Audi e-tron GT looks good and all but at that price tag, it's an easy pass.

Something tells me that BMW will heavily discount this car after 6 months in the market. I'll be waiting.

WTF is the surprise over the grille? It’s been seen for a couple years now. The entire group of 4 series cars will have very similar styling and grilles.

Besides the grill, the lack of strong character lines makes it look bloated (plus the car already being big doesn't helps). BMWBLOG did some comparisons w/ the concept and it shows even more.

Audi has it looks and has some nice lines to it but i don't like the boy racer style, the i4 concept has a more grown up styling i like that style more.

What i find weird on the Audi is the blobs under the grill if that is where the tech is then that will not work very well here in Sweden. So it won't be practical.

And that line after the front wheel arch that goes straight down looks a bit broken compared to the lower door line it doesn't flow with the rest of the side on the car.

Nor am i a big fan of the black painted front parts of the car it looks a bit also boy racer to me.

The Audi picture here is so much better looking than i4 and I'm judging it from my Industrial Design background. The i4 is so bland that it has no character at all. Viewing the sides and rear it could any auto maker's car. The front end design is the only character view and that's controversial.

If it ends up looking like this, it will be a huge missed opportunity.

Such fashion-consciousness here today! If the car is great to drive, has good range, reasonable recharging time, comfortable, spacious, and reasonably priced for the longer range version (probably the middle model of the three, the i440), I am not concerned about the grille nor if a body panel creases this way or that.

As to comparing to the Audi, doesn't matter how that looks or drives. It's an Audi. Awful experience with a 2016 A6 3.0T, from the car to the company. Never again, no matter what they make.
