thoughts/pics of winter tire/wheel set up
I'm getting my M40i in a few weeks and likely won't put the winter wheels/tires on this season but wanted to get an idea what folks are doing.
I'm getting the 19" A/S tires and would probably go down to 18" dedicated wheels/tires. I usually go with tire rack and saw some good deals there.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 for pure winter, or Nokian WR G4 all weather, but you won't find them at Tire Rack. I've had good luck with the Pirelli Scorpion Winters, and the new Conti Vikings seem to be doing well in our crappy Montana winter. This late in the season you may find slim pickings on winter tires.
There are a few, but not many 18's that will clear the M-sport brakes on the M40. I'm not 100% convinced there's enough caliper to wheel clearance with 18's to prevent the calipers from icing to the wheel, pebbles getting stuck, etc. When I went through this search, I couldn't find any OEM 18" wheels that would fit; only aftermarket. I'm running a set of square Nokians on the stock BMW 19's for winter, 20" all seasons for "summer"

So if I have stock OEM 19" wheels/tires you're saying I would have to stay with 19" setup for winter ?
And what are most of you doing? Replacing tires only or doing a dedicated tire/wheel setup for winter. Just got nailed with nearly a foot of snow here in Indianapolis last night. I'm using my '07 530xi wagon until my X3 M40i comes in next month

I got my M40i in January with the 19" wheels/tires. Was looking at 18" tire/wheel combo on Tire Rack...they guaranteed me they would fit. I ended up snagging a set of new 19" Pirelli Sottozero 3 on Ebay for a deal and they have made the X3 like a tank moving through the snow we have gotten here in the Northeast.

18's would be better in snow than 19's. But not a whole lot of 18 inch rims will fit over the m40i brakes. Also, if you are in Indy, generally your bigger concern is just cold and icy conditions, not really deep snow, like say those in the Rockies deal with on a more regular basis. And for swapping, I'd rather have a full set of tires+rims because then I can swap on my own and only have a tire shop potentially mangling the rims once every few years not twice a year.
So two main options. Use the OEM 19's and swap them over to something winter specific. Being in Indy, could probably get away with performance winters. And then use that as an opening to get a set of 20's (OE BMW or otherwise) to use for the other 3 seasons. Or get a new set of aftermarket 19's and mount with winter tires. Keeping the OEM 19's with what they have. So you'd end up with 2 sets of 19's. |

For what it's worth, we built our 2021 X3M40i with the 20" performance summer tires. We, living in Northern Indiana, need a winter option. I picked up a set of the 19" bmw winter wheel/tire setup which has a BMW Wheel, Performance Blizzaks in RFT setup. Square Setup and this car is a beast in the snow.
All said and done, the OEM 19" BMW Winter Setup is a simple, turn-key solution that works wonders in the North-Central Winters. |

I got a set of BMW rims with TMPS modules and Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 winter tires. I had Bridgestone, Pirelli, Continental and Goodyear winter tires on my previous cars and the Michelin is the best I ever had. Last edited by Ravenous666; 02-16-2021 at 01:40 PM.. |

I just placed order today for Konig Rennform wheels for winter (19" x 8.5", 5 x 112 bolt pattern, +32 offset, 66.6mm center bore).
I plan to pair them with Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV RFT (245/50R19 XL). Now looking for TPM sensors. BMW in Canada price them as if they were made out of unobtanium (or at least latinum), so I'm looking for aftermarket. Seems like OEM part (https://shop.bmw.ca/p/BMW_2020_X3-M4...106887147.html) is made by Schrader , so that's what I'm after. According to many, it's best to stick with them, although, again, many had success with HUF made ones, or even generics. So |

I would call this a propper robbery.
I got the same rims with more expensive Michelin Alpin tires and paid €2350,- (CAD$3500) including tax. And our value added tax is 19% here in Germany. Tires where delivered to my door free of charge. Mounting was an easy DIY job. Took me 45 minutes. |

Yes, it is expensive but it was exactly as advertised on the Canadian BMW site. So it's not robbery. You can't just convert money from one Country to another as there are many other factors involved. i.e duties, shipping etc...

I, personally, could not swallow BMW tax for OEM wheels for winter. Went aftermarket, even after considering a nice set of used OEM wheels. |

I cobbled together my own setup for $2,500 CAD and BMW is charging $5,300 for something marginally better. The dealer here can't even match the cost for parts I can buy from a place like ECS tuning. |

What I'm hearing and thinking now is that I should/can not go down to 18"tire/wheel combo due to the M brakes. What I think I will do is keep my OEM 19" wheel/tire combo starting next month when I get the car and then buy a 19" winter wheel/tire combo in the fall and install those for the winter. Sounds reasonable?
