Extended Warranties
I recently received information from Cooper BMW, part of the Inchcape Group, regarding an offer for extended warranty.
The offer was for 12 months extended warranty including roadside assistance and MOT cover for a single payment of £450 or £37.50 per month. I went onto the website and read through the cover, terms and conditions etc and it appeared to cover what an extended warranty could be asked to cover with a £0 excess on any repairs needed. Curious to learn of others experiences I searched online and found a F30 Bimmerpost forum thread, which whilst not condemning the Inchcape warranty, did draw my attention to a few possible issues with it. I contacted my dealer, who are Cooper BMW to gather their thoughts as to whether BMW's own extended warranty was better option to that of Inchcape. I was somewhat surprised, that as part of the Inchcape group, the service representative I spoke to, suggested from their experience of dealing with issues and repairs to vehicles post their 3 year manufacturers warranty, the BMW warranty was a better bet. To get some idea of cost comparison, I contacted BMW extended warranty and was quoted for their Comprehensive policy with £0 excess, a cost of £625. Adding a £100 excess would drop the premium to £440 and a £250 excess to £339, so it's obviously a more expensive option. The BMW approved used car warranty on my X3 doesn't end until the end of June, so a bit of time to give it some thought, but in the meantime, I would welcome any thoughts and experiences of your own regarding extended warranties and the options you had considered or opted for? |

When you go with BMW they’re are a lot more flexible about what they’ll repair, ie worn leather. A stand-alone warranty will be more strict.

Might be a North America thing but all high end marque, including BMW, have a 4 years warranty and usually a 4 years maintenance coverage.

My car 3 years old next week.
As others have said, went for BMW cover. Seems good value and was cheaper than some of the other options. If,like me, you want to pay the insurance costs to cover any unexpected issues - go BMW all the time. Dealer sorts everything out. |

It’s worth paying a little more & getting the abMW warranty, save on any hassle further down the line.
I’m glad to see the warranty isn’t too expensive, I paid over £500 with a £100 excess for my f31 335d. |

Had the same kind of email from Sytner for my X3 3.0D at £699. I established there were some (possibly) expensive exclusions, and with a small excess, the BMW own warranty was cheaper.
As I'd had experience of claims under the BMW/Mini warranty scheme (replacement diff for the X3 and a new short engine on a Cooper S), with no quibbles or messing around, went BMW. While I cant comment on the dealer's own warranty, I've heard stories of some warranty providers doing their utmost to wriggle out of claims using pathetic reasons, so went with what I am familiar with. |

I've been buying extended warranties (service contracts) for 40 years now. Most have paid for themselves. In the aggregate, I'm ahead. What I found out early on was that third party contracts could be very iffy. I avoid them. They often do just what MediaMan says, "wriggle out of claims". I've never had an issue with a manufactures contract. I'm sure this would also be true of BMW. I look at them as a sort of insurance, especially with the expensive electronics in today's vehicles. I paid around $2,500 for a lifetime contract for my Grand Cherokee. Mopar doesn't offer the lifetime anymore. But just replacing the air suspension would be over 3 grand, and the head unit is 2 grand. Peace of mind. Nice perks like a loaner, even after the factory warranty help too. Stick with the manufacturer's product and you can't go wrong.

I've just signed up for the BMW warranty on my car, £57 per month inc.roadside assistance with £100 Excess. Zero excess is another £20 a month and not worth it now.
Its a big drop from my F11 which was costing me £98 per month with no roadside assistance. |

A lot of people in the uk buy their cars on PCP over 4 years, I'm surprised they don't add in or insist in the 4th year warranty.
I am at the beginning of 4 years and love the car (apart from the faulty HK) I am wondering already if I will keep it past 4 years, two thing come to mind, Do BMW offer 4 an 5 year extended warranty (I have a 30D MHT) and will it go up (or cover) with the newer engines with the MHT as I do wonder about the longevity of the electric motor as it does an awful lot of work as its either assisting or changing and the LI battery. I can expect parts from this system being expensive, ie how long will this battery last (also whats the warranty period?). Great having new tech but 2nd/3rd (3 years onward) owners could pay a lot to keep them going. |

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread, it's reassured me that the BMW warranty is again the one to go for over other dealer type offerings. Prior to the X3 I had a X1 2.5D MSport that I covered using the BMW warranty after its normal warranty ended.
Very pleased I did because it wasn't the most reliable offering from BMW, front wishbone issues being a particular weak area. Interestingly after one repair, that I knew had taken a few hours in the workshop, i enquired with the service representative as to how much that repair would have cost me, had it not been covered by the extended warranty. He wasn't able to give me a cost, but by grabbing a quick look at the paperwork, the cost figures that would be charged to BMW, showed a fraction of the cost that I had estimated. |
