Steering Weight and Self Centring

First post ...

I'm 200 miles in with my brand new M340d Touring and I have concern about the steering. On mine it drives "straight" OK, but as soon as one starts to turn right (and I mean immediately) the steering weights up - not too heavy, but noticably. However, when one starts to turn left (again from straight) the resistance/weight is noticably less and does not weight up until further into the turn. Also I note that when driving the steering self centres much quicker/aggressively following a right hand turn. From a left hand turn the wheel returns towards centre slower, but never comes all the way back to centre.

My car is back to the dealer on Tuesday, but I'm interested to understand how other G2x behave.

My thanks in advance.

PS Great site, so much useful info here.

Sounds like maybe an alignment issue....

Curious to see what the dealer says but this has been a common gripe about the G20/22 steering from myself and many others on this site. The steering can sometimes feel "non-linear" which in turn makes it feel unnatural. Spongy, rubbery & sloppy are also adjectives that come to mind. You'll get used to it. Keep it in comfort mode and keep the front tire pressures high.

The G20 has a slow return to center in my opinion, especially on low speed turns. On higher speed turns it's much improved but still requires more effort than previous BMW's I've owned.

Hi OP. I have an 320d x-drive (in the UK) and I am experiencing exactly the same issue as you. They dealer has replaced some bolts that mount the steering rack as per a technical bulletin but this has not changed anything. Just wondering if you could let me know if you ever got this resolved? Thanks.
