Top Gear - BMW M3 by Redux: the £330,000 restomod E30 CSL that never was

What we have here is an original BMW E30 M3, but one thatís been 'Enhanced and Evolved' by Redux. Yes, itís a restomod, which means you canít refer to it as a Redux M3, else BMWís lawyers could descend on you. It is and remains a BMW E30 M3. But one thatís been fettled in the pursuit of perfection. Which has made it rather expensive. £330,000 kind of expensive. On top of the donor E30 M3 youíll have handed over. Basically, this or a Ferrari SF90, then. Quite a lot to get your wallet around. Luckily, Top Gear Magazineís Ollie Marriage is here to help.

Also a video from Carfection too:

That really is lovely. Incredibly expensive but just lovely. If I was a billionaire I'd have one.

You could probably afford it as a mere millionaire too.

I'd take a GR Yaris over this any day at 1/10th the cost. Not only is the GR Yaris more special, but it will also appreciate faster than the e30 M3 ever did.

Iíll take the Yaris after they start importing it into the US, and after it has won 1/10th of the races the E30 M3 has.

There are many more better driving tools than the Yaris. Who the fck cares about its future appreciation.

This is an icon. I can't believe it was just compared to a Yaris.

I know that this is trying to Singer the M3... I think it is absurd. This car's charm was its humble working car roots dialed up for an enthusiast. This thing is not cool... sorry. It isnt particularly good looking either - dark grey car, with angel eyes and giant rims? Sorry. Lost all of its charm.

A 911 this is not, it is not pretty industrial design as such.

Give me a patina M3 E30 with nice stock headlights and 15in BBS alloys and chunky rubber any day over this. Sorry if unpopular opinion.

Guy starts out saying 5k needed to be made for Group A that's wrong it was 500. Lots of very cool details and toys and the billet block we have been talking about on SIG for about 2 years, this will help guys here in the US as BMW has no inventory of 2.3L blocks and will not sell a 2.5L as it did not meet us emission rules as it was never tested here.

BMW has dropped the ball on us owners of the torch the E30 M3, but thankfully other companies are trying to fill the void. I'll keep my original and if I had the 330K quid It'd get a Singer or a new GT3.

You're clueless.

I can promise you that the new GR Yaris is twice as fun and capable as the e30 M3 ever was. Go test drive one next time you travel abroad and prepare to be stunned. The hype is real, whether you buy into it or not. I got a chance to test drive it (twice) on a recent trip to SE Asia.

It's the most underrated car of the century and there's a reason why it's sold out worldwide until 2023 at the earliest.

Since you clearly haven't driven one, you can't possibly know what it feels like. It is the only true homologation special worthy of praise since the e30 M3 debuted.

It's also the last mass produced car that comes only in a manual. That alone says it all.

Lancia Delta Intergrale comes to mind as a worthy. It's always going to be tough comparing old classics with modern cars. I have not drove a GR since it's been 5 years since I was last in EU but thinking Toyota USA has no plans to federalize the Yaris GR so it's a mute point.

"It's the last mass produced car to come with a manual"

- You have new Civic Si and Type R will be manual only.
- New Corolla GR coming to the US which has the GR Yaris powertrain (supposedly with an additional 40 hp over the Yaris) , also only manual.
- Hyundai i20n is only manual.

The GR Yaris is definitely an amazing car, but let's see what this GR Corolla looks like before we start saying it will appreciate better than an E30 M3.

What are you talking about? M2 CS just won Evo Car of the year last year and their writers (probably the best in business) said it was the spiritual successor of the E30 M3 in their "Top 10s" issue last month.

BMW owners spend too much time claiming that new special editions are "marketing with just some carbon bits" to realize the brand is as good as it's ever been.

....a bit strange to compare a 30+ year old car with a brand new one....
I'm sure the GR yaris is great but I doubt it'll reach e30 M3 like status.
I know you guys dont get a lot of small hardcore hatchbacks in the US, but here in europe we've also had cars like the Clio RS cup versions and such, that might be more comparable with the GR Yaris (although FWD and now aging to 10-15 years), but although very much loved, they don't* reach iconic status like the E30 M3, Delta Integrale or Urquattro, and I doubt the GR Yaris will either.

But we'll see in about 30 years
So I wonder, is the GR Yaris a true homologation car or is it more of a hommage?
I thought homologation was more or less dead in WRC and that compensation for not having for example a 4wd version in the production line up was easily compensated. I mean I see that the wrc yaris is a 3 door and afaik the current yaris is only sold as a 5 door, and the GR yaris is a 3 door, but if that's it, it's not much of a homologation..

*)except of course for the insane Clio V6, but that car is of course in a different league for it's rarity

You misread what I wrote.

I stated it's the last mass produced car to be offered ONLY with a manual. As in, you cannot opt for an automatic, just like the Civic Type R. But unlike the CTR, the GR Yaris is an entirely bespoke chassis that shares virtually nothing with a regular Yaris.

You doubt it will reach e30 M3 status? - That's funny because it already has.

Did the e30 M3 appreciate twofold in its first year of production? - Was it sold out worldwide 2 years into the future? - Was it swamped with waiting lists all over the world? - Was there ever an outcry in the US for not bringing enough of the e30 M3's here? - Never happened.

From a pure unicorn and specialness point of view, the GR Yaris is twice the car the e30 M3 ever was. And that's only in its 2nd year of production.

From an appreciation standpoint, it's no contest. I can personally guarantee you that the GR Yaris will appreciate faster and more than the e30 M3 did. It's more special in every way imaginable while retaining most of that old-school analog feel we lust over. It's also very likely the last combustion car of this pedigree.

Never say never.

Sure, they have no plans AT THE MOMENT, which is why they are releasing the GR Corolla: to test the waters. And because they don't have to certify it from scratch, it makes the most sense.

The GR Yaris is sold out worldwide till 2023. So they couldn't bring it here (yet) even if they wanted to.

Listen, I'm a huge e30 M3 fan and a big BMW nut, having owned two M3's and one M2. But Toyota is on a tear lately and the GR Yaris is the pinnacle of affordable driver's cars under ~$50k.

There is literally nothing out there that even comes close for the money.

They dropped the ball because they don't make parts that many of the owners need and have requested for years.

The new M2 is a cool car but I am not in the market for one. Wished I was but it would spend too much time in the garage under cover while I drive my utility cars.

If the person calling me clueless werenít some internet loudmouth know it all, Iíd feel really insulted.

Iíd love to compare the E30 M3 with the 1986 Yaris GR. The only thing selling like hotcakes in 1986 were white Lamborghini Countach in Miami. So it took awhile for the E30 to establish itself as the king of touring cars, and for that to trickle into the showroom. Different times, and no instagram influencers or Internet forums to spread the good word. It took the PlayStation to get the Nissan GTR to worldwide attention but its eventual iconic status still required many hard won race wins.

BTW You cannot personally guarantee the future iconic status of the Yaris any more than you can guarantee next year's Christmas weather or the dollar-£ exchange rate. For a car to gain iconic status the way the E30 did, it has to stand the test of time. And so the Toyota will need to be evaluated 35 years hence.

Maybe it will stand, and maybe it wonít. Iím not biased against it, Iím just saying some more decades need to pass. Some races and championships need to be won. And yes, some people need to age alongside it and wax nostalgic about it on the 2055 version of Facebook.
