Headlight Fade - 2020 M340i
My 2020 M340i has slight fading in multiple areas on the driver's headlight.
Was curious if anyone else had experience this issue and if so were you able to get BMW to rectify via warranty. |

It's odd that it looks somewhat like overspray…. Did you recently apply any coatings ie. Ceramic Coating, Graphene Coating?
Did you try using a clay bar to see if it improved?

Definitely not overspray; no coatings of any kind have been applied. From the pictures it's difficult to tell but I can guarantee there is an issue with the lens itself.

I have this SAME issue on my car. It's actually much worse than yours. Took it to the dealer and they denied my warranty claim. I opened a new claim with Bmw North America now. Fingers crossed but it doesn't seem like they want to replace them because of the cost (About $7000 for the pair)

Is this happening primarily with Laserlight headlights option or are the standard headlights affected as well? To OP & other poster, sorry to see this happening to you guys, seems like a manufacturing defect to me.

From what I have heard and read it's specific to the laser lights only, but again I could be totally off base. Appreciate your kind words and I believe you are correct, definitely a manufacturing issue. I have yet to take my car to any dealer to see if they would honor the warranty, wanted to gather some insight from others prior to beginning my warranty journey!

Attaching photos. This definitely seems to be a defect on the laser headlights. And the excuse they gave me is "sun damage." Externals causes made them fog up. I was like you can't be seriously be telling a 1.5-year-old car has sun-damaged headlights already? If that's true then there is a serious defect. Imagine in 3-4 more years. If BMW North america denies it, I am 100% going to say it's going to become a safety issue once the front of the headlights fog, and at that point, I will get a lawyer.

I fully agree - can you imagine purchasing a set of headlights for your vehicle (roughly $6k for a set) knowing that within a span of <2yrs they would begin to incur issues. No one in their right mind would proceed with the purchase! But here we are, folks are paying a premium for the laser style assemblies, only to be faced with issues and denied warranty claims. Keep me posted on the outcome of your endeavor with BMW North America. I will keep you posted as I begin the warranty journey on my end - good luck! |

I wouldn't let it concern you. From what I have read this issue seems to be an isolated event and only effects a small amount of units. I will be taking my car to the dealer for warranty verification on the light this Thursday - I will keep you posted on the outcome.

I wouldn't worry about it. You can buff them out. I am just trying to get BMW to give me new headlights because this is definitely a manufacturer defect and they are trying to say it's not.

Been almost two months now. I am going to try to contact the caseworker tomorrow morning. It's SO hard to get a hold of these people. I have the caseworker's direct extension but she never answers. Basically, the best way is to call the 1-800 number, wait for 30-40 mins for them to answer, then they will leave a direct message to the caseworker who may or may not call you back.

Not sure if it's best to search out a local but reputable detail company and have them correct the lens…. |

Ouch! I'd suggest you open a case with BMW North America also. If there are multiple reports they might figure out something is actually wrong. I finally got a call back from the caseworker today. She said the regional team wants the dealership to diagnose my headlights again, so I am taking it to BMW tomorrow. Let me know how it goes if you decide to just get them buffed out.

I hope for your sake the dealership will have a more positive diagnosis than previous Actually, I was taking a more in depth inspection at my lights today and the fading is on the interior of the lens so there is no physical way to have them buffed out…Still difficult for me to understand how BMW states the damage has been caused from an outside source when the damage is internal??!! Keep me posted |

After I just went out and looked at them I realized you are right. It's fogging from the inside which is kind of odd. Good point, I will be pointing that out to the dealer tomorrow. I also noticed its much more noticeable in my garage versus during the day at the dealer. The sunlight reflects off the inside and hides the fogginess a lot.
