G30 M550i Knocking sounds
Hey guys,
I am going through something we all dread, knocking/ticking sound from the engine. Im trying to determine if its the rod bearing and i should sell a kidney or if its just the lifters and i should sell a kidney and use the spare cash to do more upgrades. I currently have a dinan exhaust/mid pipe and dinan stage 1 tune on it. Just got OEM sparks and coils changed 100km ago. Here is a cold start video of how it sounds, seems to be coming from around the centre at the top. Any feedback is appreciated. Have my doctor on standby. |

What year is your M550 ? How many miles/km on the clock ? Assuming its out of the powertrain warranty ? Did you check for codes ? |

That doesn't sound good, sorry about it! Any chance the car has been driven hard before being warmed up to operation temperature? Are you the first owner ?

I'd pull the oil filter and look for shiny bits in it. Also, as long as the crank is ok, if you did lose a rod bearing you might be ok. If crank is bad it's short block time.

crap, just realized something else: check your AC compressor. I had my E90M3 lose the main bearing on the AC compressor and it sounded just like this.

Hey all, here is an update of what is happening:
The car was dropped at the shop and they have been checking everything but still have not found the issue. The spark plugs were taken out and each cylinder inspected with a camera and still no luck. The oil filter was checked and had no traces of metal. They started taking the car apart and took the oil pans out and they suspect the sound is coming from the bottom end of the engine around the passenger side. I will hopefully know what the issue is by tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed and ill be sure to keep you updated. Thanks for all the help! |

sorry, the car is 2018 and has 60k miles on it. I bought everything direct from the dinan website, i was not offered any sort of warranty so im not sure about that. Right now as it stands im probably going to have to pay out of pocket. |

Thanks for the info. Hopefully the 'shop' you're using is BMW specialized. I hope its nothing too serious, but if they're tearing apart your lower end.....that's not a good sign.

Bad Bad News
Hey all, so turns out the engine is toast. This is what the shop informed me:
We have noted the engine noise you mentioned and inspected the engine oil and filter, both appear to be in relatively good condition. Scanned the vehicle and no relevant faults stored. Upon further inspection of possible internal engine damage we have found all connecting rod bearings to be in ok condition. We have noted sever damaged to the cylinder walls on cylinder number 5 and moderate damage to cylinder number 6. All other cylinders appear to be ok at this time. It appears that the piston or piston skirt has failed damaging the cylinder walls. We have not identified any further cause of failure at this time as the vehicle was and still seems to be running ok with no faults other than the noise noted. Im attaching images of cylinder 5 and cylinder 1 which is in good condition for comparison. |

Sorry to hear that. At 60,000 miles, that is not normal. Was it tracked often? Has anyone else heard of this happening at such low mileage?

Yup the quote i got was just slightly higher than that. They would have to replace it with a brand new engine from the newer model that has the upgraded turbos. Im currently disputing with BMW

Let me get this straight, you're a second owner, the car has 60K+ miles and it has a Dinan tune and other Dinan parts?
I'll be in awe of BMW does anything to help. I suggest you start looking at 3rd party repair shops to see what they can do to correct those cylinder walls.

This is disappointing. Used motor from a wrecked M550i if BMW won't help. Bad news indeed.

Have you contacted Dinan to ask if they can do anything ? As Claykin said, if BMW knows or finds out that you have a tune, i'd doubt they will do anything for you. |

Are 5 and 6 running the leanest and hottest I wonder? Unless the piston looks like its suffered knock on the surface, this is more likely cylinder pressure thats blown by the rings I guess.
I put 10 bucks on: Too much timng + boost = too much heat. |

The Dinan tune is one of the "mildest" tunes available. I was quite disappointed with it to be honest as i barely noticed any difference. I have attached a picture of what dinan claims the difference to be in comparison to stock.
The car still runs great and has no loss of power or any error codes but its obviously not being driven at all. I have actually never even launched the car or tried to hit max speed or anything and 95% of the time im driving in comfort mode. I have obviously enjoyed it a few times in sport + but nothing crazy. Im going to reach out to Dinan and see if they can help. |

OP, have you attempted to reach out to BMW Canada customer service?
BMW Customer Service: 1-800-567-2691 or customer.service@bmw.ca You have nothing to lose by asking. Who knows? Perhaps there is a known issue like this (cylinder liner failure) that BMW may help you. |
